Mildred Taylor is a wonderful storyteller. She puts you in the shoes of a black family in the early thirties. Her description of the Logan family and the community both black and white are riveting. You actually felt you were in the shoes of a repressed, persecuted, fearful black still living under white domination in the South YEARS after slavery was outlawed. My son read this book as a seventh grader and encouraged me to read it. I cried at the percussion of blacks under some whites. One family, the Logans, landowners stood up to the white persecutors and the suffering of the black family under some of the whites was heartbreaking. I recommend this book to young readers and adults alike. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I promise you'll find this book well worth reading no matter your age!
