I bought this book as a great introduction on rocks for a child. It is full of colorful pictures to help identify rocks and gives simple information about the basics and not great detail that would be over a child's head or bore them. Examples of how rocks influence our daily lives are given, adding to the fun and learning experience. It is small and easy for a child to handle and carry with them. It can be used as they mature and understand more of the information. It is also a good book for the amateur rock collector. In addition to the information above, it lays out the basics on beginning collecting and digging at a site for rocks. This book is not for the advanced collector or someone interested in very detailed geology. This book is very old and therefore the pictures of the rocks are drawings, not photographs of actual rocks, which make the quality less acurate.
