Album Notes
Full performer name: George Thorogood & The Destroyers.
George Thorogood & The Destroyers: (vocals, guitar); Hank Carter (vocals, saxophone, guitar, keyboards); Waddy Wachtel (guitar); Bil Blough (bass); Jeff Simon (drums); Tony Berg (tamboura).
Producers: Waddy Wachtel, The Delaware Destroyers.
ROCKIN' MY LIFE AWAY was the first George Thorogood album in years to be produced by someone other than Terry Manning, who's replaced here by guitar hero Waddy Wachtel. It's an oddly schizophrenic affair. About half of the album features the Destroyers in their typical mode, derived as much from '60s garage punk as from Muddy Waters, while the rest is unusually tasteful, particularly in the vocal department (Wachtel clearly took pains to ensure that Thorogood took care with his singing). The cover songs--Frank Zappa's blistering "Trouble Every Day" and John Hiatt's "The Usual"--are surprisingly grown-up. Longtime fans need not worry that he's gone soft, however, as one listen to Thorogood's own "Rock & Roll Man" will make clear. After all, what other rock star could get away with singing a line like "I'm a rock & roll king/been rockin' and rollin' since the dynasty of Ming?"
