Rockford Season #1 is Great Despite Universal's Blunder

Volume One of the Rockford Files dvd series finally gives us the complete first season (minus the un-aired pilot - which is included in Volume Two) of the highly-acclaimed television series from the 1970s.
This colorful box set gives a small summary of each episode contained in the set. Unfortunately, it doesn't list important information such as names of the guest stars in each episode, run-time of each episode, or the orignal broadcast date of each episode.
While the other sets in this series contain 5 to 6 discs, for some strange reason Season One contains only 3 discs and these are double-sided (and thus wont last very long before they're covered in scratches, no matter how delicately you handle them) and each come contained in a separate slim plastic container/jewel pack. This is a big drawback, so make sure you consider it before purchasing this set.
Why Universal did Volume One on the cheap and transferred all these episodes onto 3 double-sided dvds is beyond me. Certainly the other volumes in the series were not done in this fashion. On the plus side, both the picture and sound quality are extraordinary. And the scripts, acting, casting, directing and music are above first rate and without a single disappointment.
It's great to finally have this series on dvd. We may wish Universal had made more of an effort to deliver a better product here, but we are forced to live with this until something better comes along. All in all, I still say don't pass it up because it is one of the best series to ever hit television. Just be forewarned of its shortcomings.
