Generally good movie.

All in all, I generally liked this movie. I loved the way this movie reminded me of some of the old radio and early television programs that I listened to and watched as a child. The interplay between Bill Campbell and Alan Arkin was absolutely hilarious and I must say that I love anything with the gorgeous and extremely talented Jennifer Connelly. Timothy Dalton as the sleazy movie star/ neo-nazi spy was absurd and likable at the same time but I was left wondering why is it that whenever Timothy Dalton plays a role in a movie he always has the same dumb expression on his face (for example, he wore the same expression when he played the eternally boring insipid James Bond).
Now, for the problems I have with this movie:
1) Why was the incredibly talented Paul Sorvino cast for this movie? For the life of me, I just can't seem to understand why they cast such an excellent actor to portray the role of a so-called dumb crime don in "da mob." As a brief aside to this question, I am part Italian American from New Jersey (New Joisey as the stupid idiots in Hollywood refer to the state)and spend the 40+ years of my life around Italian Americans and have never in my entire life had any contact with anyone from "da mob" or heard anyone I was related to speak in such a phony Italian accent from a supposed New York (New Yaak as Hollywood likes to refer to it) that only exists in very bad Hollywood movies. Now, I have read about references to certain members of "The Family" such as The Gambino Crime Family, etc. but "da mob" doesn't exist in the real world except in a bunch of bad Hollywood movies based on misinformation and just general ignorance about the role of Italian Americans in society. Hollywood needs to get a clue and correct their stereotype of Italian Americans in general (even the HBO series, The Supranos, is an offence to Italian Americans because I have never in my entire life met any Italian Americans that act anywhere near like the characters in the show. But, as I was originally saying before I got sidetracked, Paul Sorvino is too good an actor to be wasted portraying such a dumb character. He really deserved a better role in this movie than the one they gave him.
2) The stereotypical role of the German nazi's in this movie was rediculous. As I said before, I am part Italian American. However, the other part of me is German. I have never in my entire life seen such an obvious attempt to ridicule and malign the Germans as they did in this movie. But, tell me this, if the Germans were so inept and stupid as Hollywood likes to believe and portray them, then how come they conquered all of Europe in WW II and almost won the war. They also bombed the crap out of England and were one step from reaching the US. If it wasn't for the paranoid delusions of Hitler, the Germans would have won the war, but instead they listened to that mad fool and lost. The German characters in this movie were absolutely pathetic and couldn't even fight their way out of a wet paper bag, which just goes to show you the negative stereotype that Hollywood has created over the years to denigrate the German people. Most of the German people I knew or grew up with were smart as a whip and knew how to take care of themselves in any situation, and not come across looking like fools to be overpowered by "da mob" or "the feds" as they are referred to in the movie.
Other than these two pet peeves of mine, this was a generally good movie.
