The Rocket (DVD, 2007)

This film is a fantastic journey into hockeys' past. The look and feel of the scenes - they have a fuzzy, smoky - almost dreamlike appearance. You feel as though you are viewing back through time as this great tale unfolds. This is a film for MOVIE fans, not just hockey people. The story doesn't pile-on with too many drawn-out scenes - or even lengthy game sequences. You get little segments, each satisfying in its content and delivery. You really feel for "The Rocket" and his battles become yours as well. A wonderful cast, completely engrossing sets and costumes complete the illusion. This is what movies are supposed to do: take you away for a bit and also make you care about the characters. The Rocket succeeds on all levels. The tiniest complaint I can make is that the English-language version still has some on-screen narrative bits that are not translated. I am guessing that they are translated if the closed-captions are turned on, but then you'd need to watch the film captioned throughout. Don't let this TINY nit-pick rob you of a great movie experience. I just saw it today and this evening I am on eBay, looking for a copy. It's a keeper!

Overall, we liked the movie a lot and we learned about Maurice Richard "The Rocket" one if the greatest players of all time. The movie was sad and happy, but ultimatley a relly good movie. There are some voice overs that don't match since some of the movie was filmed by French actors, but that is not really a problem. We enjoyed the film and would recommend it to the real hockey fans for sure.
