Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964) is a fun gangster movie muscial starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Bing Crosby, and Peter Falk. When the big boss in Prohibition-era Chicago, played by none other than the original screen gangster, Edward G. Robinson, is taken out by the traitorous Guy Gisborne (Falk, who is great in this role), control over the city's rackets is up for grabs. Gisborne is quick to grab, but Robbo (Sinatra) refuses to follow him. The two rivals vie for power in a gang war, and Robbo is severely outgunned. He's joined by out-of-town pool-player Little John (Martin), feisty Will (Davis), and Allen A. Dale (Crosby),the director of an orphanage.
When Robbo donates money to the orphanage, Dale spreads word of Robbo's good deed, giving him the reputation of a modern-day Robin Hood, which endears him to the Chicagoans. Gisborne strikes back by having Robbo arrested for a murder he didn't commit and testifying against him at his trial. Robbo is found not guilty and celebrates by singing "My Kind of Town," but his troubles aren't over yet. He's got to contend with dissention within his own gang and the mysterious and alluring Marian (Barbara Rush), who claims she is the deceased big boss's daughter.
Robin and the 7 Hoods is a very entertaining movie, with great songs performed by some of the century's best singers. My favorite number is "Style," in which Frank and Dino teach the obsoletely dressed Bing how to look fashonable and smart like them. The transformation of Robbo's speakeasy into a reformation center to fool Gisborne and the cops and Crosby's subsequent "Mister Booze" number are hilarious. Robin and the 7 Hoods is a thoroughly enjoyable film that will please viewers of all ages.
