Bouyant!!!

Bouyant!
That is the single best word to describe Canadian band Great Big Sea's music.
When co-lead singer Alan Doyle shouts "Get up! Get up! Get up!" to the live audience, it's not to get them to their feet- they're already there. It's to get them jumping in the air, hands over head, clapping and singing for all they're worth. Bouyant!! You can't sit down, and your spirits can't STAY down listening to a GBS song. Bouyant!!! Crowd interaction, a Great Big Sea trademark.
If you can't make it to a live concert (I pity you!), then this CD is the next best thing. It is like a vacation on a disk.
GBS takes old maritime folk tunes and brings a fresh, modern twist to them, while still enjoying the sweet melodies that made them favorites. Don't be fooled- just because they use traditional instruments, this is not a stodgy band. Their original material is amazing, and they do a healthy mix of trad and new material.
The wonderful thing about GBS is that every time they play a song, they play it in a new and different way. So while the Road Rage album naturally includes live versions of studio songs, each and every one is different from what you've heard before- not a rote rehash like some bands do.
Donkey Riding, a personal favorite, has been pumped up on adrenaline. Gosh, so many good, good tunes, not a bad one on the album....Up!, Everything Shines, Excursion Around the Bay, everything is tight, enjoyable, and definitely live. Alan's voice isn't cracking-he's laughing at the crowd while singing Consequence Free. He's obviously having a good time, and doggone it, so do I when I listen to this album.
Sean McCann the Shanty Man is in fine fettle during General Taylor, and even during the oddly tuneful Hanging Johnny, a delightfully macabre song about a hangman enjoying his work.
And there are blissfully fun versions of The Old Black Rum and The Night That Paddy Murphy died.
This is the CD I play over and over and over again. If you have to have only one GBS album, this is the one, but why oh why would you want only one?
