I don't know what to say

I'm a huge fan of Patricia Cornwell - I have four early favorites that I like to re-read every few years - as well as others. I usually like her books, whether I would give them a four or a five. I don't even know what to say about this book. What was it about? Who wrote it? After I "finished" the book, I checked amazon.com to be sure my perceptions were correct, and they did jive with the feedback on that site. This goes beyond disappointing to sort of bewildering. It's like "when is the book going to start?".

Where, Oh Where has the old Patricia Cornwell gone?
Review created: 07/23/06
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Where did the old Patricia Cornwell go? I have read everything she's written, her 1st 4 novels are classics, but her last 3 have really been on the poorly written side. I couldn't even finish Predator and this one couldn't even keep my attention while I was a passenger on a flight from Georgia to California, I wanted to get off the plane and get a different book. I felt like I was stuck with these characters for five hours of boring drivel. Please write like the earlier novels. I am going to start checking her books out in the library first before commiting to buy them.

At Risk is a no brainer mystery

I have listened to every book that Patricia Cornwell has written, but I think this will be the last. When Kay Scarpetta was retired the books became flat and uninteresting. No more, but thanks for the memories. It may be time to bring your star out of retirement.

This book was flat. You keep waiting for the "moment" to happen, and it doesn't. It had the makings of a TV series but not a page turning book.

Patricia really dropped the ball on this one. Very disappointing. The book was really boring, did not have a good ending...Ebay has asked me to review this and I have but now they are requiring no less than 100 characters...there think I did it

I usually love this author, but didn't really enjoy this one. Very hard to get into. Struggled through to the end and was disappointed with it, too.

  Not the typical Cornwell book.

Every few years Patricia Cornwell puts a book out that makes you scratch your head, and wonder "What the @#@$ was she thinking?!" She as tried this with "Southern Cross" and another one. She puts so much thought and energy into her Kay Scarpetta novels, and yet it seems like "At Risk" was just thrown out there to put something new on the shelves. I am still a huge fan of Patricia Cornwell, and always will be, but this one left me lukewarm.

It is not her usual quality of story

The book was too short to fit the story in, so many details seem jumbled. I prefer her Kay Scarpetta novels as they are more detailed and have a better story line.

It's something new from Patricia Cornwell other than her great but were getting very old Dr. Scarpetta series. It laid a good foundation of a new character that I would like to read more about. So many ways that she can go and it's all new and exciting.

This was an ok book - it is very short and I think if it had been explored a little deeper the story would have been a lot better. All in all though it accomplishes what I hope to get from an audiobook - nothing too deep but still an entertaining day.

Cornwell introduces a new charactter that I liked very much. I enjoy her writing. Looking forward to reading more books with this new character. A bok
from her assures a 99.9% good read.

At Risk CD by Patricia Cornwell
Review created: 07/10/06

The story was decent, but not up to par with some of Cornwell's other work such as her earlier Kay Scarpetta novels. The reader was difficult to listen to. Her voice was sharp and staccato, and she attempted to change her voice to suit the characters, which in her case did not work for me. She wasn't convincing as a male, and her accents failed. She detracted from the story itself.
Cornwell is one of my favorite quick read authors, and I enjoy her forensic approach. This was a decent way to spend a few hours on the road, but I wouldn't recommend the CD because of the reader.

  What a disappointment...
Review created: 07/07/06
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was disappointed when I discovered that At Risk by Patricia Cornwell was only 4 CD's in length...unabridged. I have read/listened to every one of her works (usually 8 to 12 discs, unabridged) and longed for the next one. She has a remarkable writing style and so many strong characters that you have a hard time letting them go, be it Scarpetta or Marino or Andy Brazil! This was not the case in At Risk...oh the wonderful style is there but that's about it. The story was flat and none of the characters were memorable. I felt that it was in no way up to the standard that she has gotten us used to experiencing. Maybe it was a blessing that it WAS only 4 CD's.

I really did like my audio book "At Risk". I bought through Ebay because it was priced below the what the retail stores were selling it for. Ebay is a good resource for great prices on audio books.

I enjoyed the plot and the new characters, however, I miss Kay Scarpetta. Not as gripping as the Scarpetta series but 100 times better then "Isle of Dogs".

I liked this book. it was the traditional cornwell style with lots of suspense.
It was not part of the Scarpeta series, but equally as well written.

This is one in a series of 14 audiobooks about Kay Scarpetta, Medical Examiner in Virginia. The author, Patricia Cornwell, is a master at murder mysteries that are technically accurate, believable and suspenseful to the end. I am a recently retired Police Lt. myself, and am picky about the believability of many of the murder mysteries out there. You will love this series!!!

not as good as a Kay Scarpetta novel, but still good
Review created: 07/09/06

It seemed to read(listen) like an abridged novel instead of an unabridged. I think Patricia Cornwell is one of the best mystery writers. She puts great effort into her books. I mainly purchased the book because Kay wrote it and I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Kay Scarpetta novels. I would like to see more of them.
