Rio500 up to 192MB capacity Good Quality Great Prices
Review created: 10/07/05(updated 03/06/08)

Rio is now officially out of the MP3 player business, as of late September 2005, but the Diamond Rio 500 is still a practical and reliable little MP3 player, and you won’t be able to find any other MP3 players for sale today of it’s quality, for even a tenth of the price.

Contrary to the item description information provided, you can now up-date the Rio500’s firmware, at no cost, to version 2.16. This firmware upgrade allows users to use Smart Media cards up to 128 MB, for a total of 192 MB, including the onboard 64 MB that each player shipped with. Also, the Rio500 uses a single AA battery, and works just fine with the rechargeable kind. Rioworld.org has a list of software and drivers available to work with the Rio500.

The Rio500 shipped “Audible Ready™” and Auidible.com still lists the Rio500 as a player compatible with their audio book content, so if you are interested in trying out that kind of audio content, or you are just shopping for an affordable, and cool looking MP3 player that won’t let you down, then give the Diamond Rio500 a try.

Download, Drive, Listen: I Just Read A Book with Rio 500

Pros:
A handy little gadget that allows you to listen to audio books.

Cons:
The battery doesn't last long enough.

This past Father s Day, my stepson gave my husband a gift of the Rio 500, which was part of a deal offered by Audible.com. The deal was a Rio 500 player if you sign up for a 12-month subscription through Audible.com for $99 less a $50 rebate making it $49. You have to buy the Light Listener Membership, which is $12.95/month. This gets you 2 books per month from any of the books Audible.com offers. I am reviewing the Diamond Rio 500 Digital Audio Player. I did not know and neither did my husband that this is a refurbished player. (I checked with an electronics advisor, who said, in his opinion.

Pros:
Beautiful case, sleek and light, great sound, good software

Cons:
Expensive, software tricky to install

New to Napster, and still marveling at the miracle of downloading all my favorite songs to my computer, I was introduced to MP3 by my son. He had been carrying around his slim, transparent purple Diamond Rio for weeks in a nifty black cargo net-like clip-on case. Once in a while he would hand it to me, inviting me to admire its sound. Impressive, I thought. Great sound, and wonderful futuristic look. All of the tiny music computer's workings are clearly visible through its case. A single AA battery sits at the bottom, encircled by a thin black ribbon for easy unloading. Control buttons in...

  MP3 player - Diamond Rio 500 MP3 player
Review created: 10/01/00

Pros:
Sleek, Sexy, Sturdy, Simple to use and mp3's Sound is great

Cons:
Pouch design, headphones, price

Two months ago I purchased the Rio 500 MP3 player and it has proven to be an excellent choice. I'm not too bothered by the fact that it doesn't have added extras like an FM radio, digital voice recording and other 'advanced' options. If you're after a feature packed player, then I would advise looking elsewhere (e.g. Creative Labs Nomad). The Rio has been designed as a no nonsense high quality MP3 player - it doesn't strive to be anything more - and that's to its advantage. The Software and Installation The software that Diamond provide is called 'RioPort Audio Manager', which was extremely...

  Take me anywhere

Pros:
Expandable RAM, Win2k/Linux Support

Cons:
Poor Software, Cheap Headphones

My husband wanted to surprise me a few months back with a gift. To my surprise it was the Rio500. I had never seen or so much as heard of a portable MP3 player. I really didn't know what to think. After he explained to me that he bought it for me to take to the gym with me, I swore to myself that it was something he had wanted and figured I wouldn't like it so I'd give it to him. Well as it turns out I love this thing. My favorite feature is I am able to take it in the car with me now by using the cassette tape adapter. (You can find it most stores) It just plugs into the headphone jack then..

Diamond Rio 500--Does Its Age Make It Better?
Review created: 07/06/00
by: rahulm -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Small and sleek design, great battery life, exceptional sound quality, great price for 64MB memory

Cons:
No FM tuner

I recently had the good fortune of receiving the Diamond Rio 500 MP3 player as a gift. I've found this player to be a great device, with functionality mixed with fun and entertainment. I hope the following review helps you decide whether the Rio 500 is for you. Installation The Rio 500 is incredibly easy to install. I simply plugged in the USB cable into our computer, and popped in the installation CD. An automated wizard took us through the entire setup process, and I was on my way to transferring songs onto the portable player. Diamond's RioPort Audio Manager software is an all inclusive...
