My requirements were something small, all flash (SD media), ease of operation and good sound quality. I have read reviews that knocked this thing because it frequently "shut off" at random. It does this when battery gets low, and batteries do not last the listed spec of "Up to 20 hours of battery life". It might come close if you only use the radio since this would obviously require less power. But you can count on getting 10-12 hours on a single AAA battery using the embedded or SD flash memory. I bought a 1GB SD card and with my internal 512MB I have more than enough music for my work outs, dirt bike rides and snow skiing sessions. Ease of use? If you can't navigate the menus on this thing then you're probably not even able to read this review... they're simple! The arm band, belt clip and size make this as portable as anything out there. The Rio met all my requiements plus I get AAA battery compatibility (that was huge and I never even considered this as a plus when looking to buy). I have friends that need to recharge built-in bats... sucks to be them. I can stop at a 7-11 and be back in business. If you want small, portable, easy to use, SD compatible, AAA power, good battery life and a great sound (improves with aftermarket phones), this is your baby. I love my Rio Forge 512 so much that I've purchased two more to replace the one I damaged (my own fault). I have been using a 4GB SD card in mine, for a total of 4.5GB. It's easy to use, sounds great, and is far cheaper that the comparable iPod Nano (even with the cost of the 4GB SD card). I use rechargeable alkaline batteries in mine, which work great for me. Compared to the other flash-memory MP3 players I have owned (Philips Rush, RCA Lyra, Apple iPod Shuffle, and SanDisk), this one is the champ. For the guy complaining about how NiMH batteries start out at 3/4 of the battery meter, go into the settings menu and change the battery type setting from alkaline to NiMH; it might help out with your other power issues. Also, I highly recommend the latest firmware update (v3.04, the Developer's Cut) which is available for download around the internet. Review ID: 10000000004008513 Was this review helpful? The Good thing about it is the fact that it is easy to use, everything comes with it and it's relatively portable. But unfortunately after about 4 or 5 months it started turning off. I'd be running and the jarring of my body would turn it off. I've taken it snowboarding too. I did close research and from my research I felt that this MP3 player would be able to take the "hits" that my body takes. But unfortunately the thing won't stay on. Even now I'll listen to it and if it even lightly tap on it (and I mean lightly) the Rio turns off. I would not recommend it. Review ID: 10000000000705582 Was this review helpful? NetLibrary is the largest free audiobook supplier and is available through most major public libraries' websites with just your library card number as ID. Unfortunately, all of their books are WMA DRM protected and are one humongously long track averaging 9 to 12 hours (even longer for some books). This presents unique problems. Most MP3 players are designed for songs or podcasts of relatively short duration. If you accidentally move to the next track, change your battery, decide to take a break and listen to music or the FM radio, it's not a big deal to go back to your original selection and fast forward to where you left off. However, this is not practical if you are in the middle of a 10 hour book and need to find where you left off. So, for practical purposes the need for several features exists. They are: 1) A progressive fast forward button that progressively picks up speed the longer you hold it down 2) One or more true "bookmarks" which you frequently utilize during the listening of a book and absolutely need when you take a break from listening, whether to listen to something else, change batteries, or just quit for a while. 3) A very desirable feature is a "sleep timer" which will turn off the player after a selected period of time and take a bookmark. With the free Forge "Developer's Cut" software this feature has been implemented. So, what's good and what's bad? The good is that for a device that can be purchsed for $25 to $50 on ebay you get all of these features. You will not get them for less than $100 - $200 with other MP3 players and at that price many still do not have such support. While the Rio Forge is avaialble only in what seems to be paltry 256MB and 512MB sizes, they accept SD cards. With 1 GB SD cards selling regularly for under $20 you vastly increase the capacity for only a few dollars more. 1.25GB or 1.5GB is enough for 4 to 6 or more complete unabridged audiobooks. Even if you don't listen to audiobooks, you can store and listen to 5 to 10 hour of music at high Kbps levels. If the Rio FOrge worked as it should, it would be a very ideal machine. So, what's wrong? The Rio Forge likes to turn itself off. This is caused by any jarring or twisting or even pushing a control button too hard or too fast. It is even more sensitive when batery battery declines. (Using the more practical rechargeable NiMH batteries, you start out at a nominal voltage of only 1.25V instead of 1.50V, so the battery meter always starts out at about 3/4 level.) When the system turns off in this abnormal fashion, it is as if you suddenly removed the battery. Your playing position within the track is lost. When you restart you need to go back to the beginning of the track (the beginning of the book with NetLibrary audiobooks). So, unless you had bookmarked shortly before this occurred, you need to find where you left off. I wish I could say that only my Rio Forge was defective (which it clearly is). However, I have done a fair amount of Internet research and subscribed to several different forums taht discuss these issues. It seems as though this problem is more the rule than the exception. If you are sitting quietly or laying in bed, you'll probably be OK. But you'll be diappointed if you use this machine while exercising, walking, jogging, or doing housework or yardwork. I purchased the Rio Forge Sport (512 MB) and with it came a WARRANTY. The battery door arrived broken, and the supposedly SUPPLIED battery did not come with it. I contacted RIO per my Warranty instructions - and even though the item was COVERED under Warranty - RIO refused to send me a new battery door OR the battery. The answer I received was "We're sorry - there are no 512 battery doors available." When I asked that they replace the ENTIRE PRODUCT, they said "We're sorry - there are no new 512's available." You need to make sure your SELLER will help you out, because you won't get anywhere with RIO. Review ID: 10000000000814711 Was this review helpful? I was looking for an MP3 player that didn't have to be plugged in to charge and this fills the bill. Review ID: 10000000003734703 Was this review helpful? Report this review Rio Sport is simple and easy to use. The size makes it easy to store in small compartments like your pocket if necessary and very light so when you wear it on your arm you only feel the arm band not the player. I think it's cute how it fits in the palm of your hand naturally. The sound quality is great even when using the AM/FM tuner. This product is easy in placing it in lock position and not in a place where you might easily switch it off by mistake. I would definitely recommend this product and would buy it again. Report this review Review created: 10/12/06 by: This is a neat little mp3 player, I would most likely recommend this to a young teenager or someone who wants an mp3 player that won't break easily, and without the investment of an IPOD. The forge has an easily readable screen, so its very easy to see when it's dark out, or even with the screen scratched badly. The forge has a well designed screen setup so its not too cluttered when trying to find music, the time, or other various information. The shape of the Forge makes it very easy to hold and hard to drop, but just in case, it comes with clips for clothing and an arm band. If you absolutely insist on dropping the player it is shock resistant and will withstand drops for a while, but every player does have its breaking point. Spacewise, this player is pretty good, 512mb will get you about 160 songs. The great thing about this player is that it has the option to have more memory, you can add up to 2gb of extra memory with an SD card. Due to this feature you can buy the player now for low cost then later if you want, you can make if hold more. The sound quality of this player is superb, personally i would say there is no difference in the sound quality of this versus the sound quality of a 300 dollar ipod, its all in the headphones!!! This player is very durable, as i mentioned you can drop it, but you can do other things as well. I have stepped on my Forge, and it still works. Best of all I left it in my pocket and it took a ride in the washing machine; lo and behold it still worked, although the battery needed to be replaced. Now lets discuss this devious battery, luckily for me the battery is a AAA, easy to replace and cheap to buy, much better than sending it away to get a silly rechargeable battery. In terms of battery life, I don't believe over the course a month of listening I have had to replace the battery (Thats about 40 minutes a day of listening). This player is loaded with special features, such as a radio, a radio recorder and of course the expandable memory. The Radio is good quality nothing to great, but then this isn't a radio, its an mp3 player. The radio recorder has come in handy several times, i have recorded several songs on the spot that i just love. Of course the expandable memory option makes this player all the better, you can turn this 160 song holding player into a 900 or more song holding player. I feel it necessary to mention how great the headphones are, although i have since moved on from this player for sheer reason of my geeky-ness i have held on to these headphones, unlike most earbuds that come with players, these didn't break! They have gone through the wash and been stretched and they still sound great. Now let's talk cost, the Forge, as you can see is very cheap now, you can pick it up for 50 dollars here on ebay or a mere 75 in stores. If you are interested in more memory you can grab a 2gb SD on zipzoomfly.com for 20 dollars or here for 30. All in all in terms of cost, you could have this player as good as a IPOD Nano, or mini for a mere 70 dollars, well worth the cost. Since I am running out of characters to tell you how great this mp3 player is, you can go to: http://www.digitalnetwork for more information. In the end, i would most certainly recommend this player to anyone who just wants a good entry level player. Even if you have an ipod, this is a good one to take to where an IPOD can't go. Hope it helps! -Jack C http://www.R Review ID: 10000000002119892 Was this review helpful? Report this review Page 1 of 1 Ready to share your opinion with others? Write a Review |
