Coleridge's famous poem needs a sympathetic illustrator to compliment the prose and Gustave Dore is that illustrator. Dove's illustrations always have a feeling of bleak seediness (particularly when he is illustrating the Victorian crime underworld) and this fits perfectly with the story of the Ancient Mariner.
