Old fashioned melodrama

This is a good illustrated novel, with a melodramatic taste to it. It is about predictable characters doing predictable things. A bit like watching an episode of Matlock, where you'll see a despicable character, who gets killed, with an innocent sap who gets arrested, and Matlock who gets put in an impossible situation to defend him. Like that, this novel has characters who want what other characters like them want, and who get what's coming to them. It is at the same time comfortable in its familiarity and pleasurable in its readying, if not a bit too predictable to be truly remarcable. The art is quite capable but nothing special. A good if not exceptionable read.
