Album Notes A special CD only collection compiled from King Sunny Ade's 3 records made in Nigeria since 1986; "Sweet Banana", "My Dear" and "Let Them Stay". Includes liner notes by Henk Tummers. RETURN OF THE JUJU KING is a compilation of tracks from three albums released in the late '80s on King Sunny Ade's Nigerian record label Atom Park. The material, which Ade wrote and recorded in the wake of his separation from Island Records, is as vital and rewarding as his earlier better-known work, avoiding the over-slick production that occasionally marred his Island releases. Here, Ade's self-described "syncro system" is in full effect. His songs evolve through free-flowing grooves built on interlocking guitar lines, synthesizer sounds, call-and-response vocals, and a shimmering thicket of talking drums, congas, bells and rattles. Songs like "Sweet Banana," "E Gbe Kini Yi Laruge" and "A Mbo O" are cast in the classic juju mold, highlighting the Yoruban drumming style while drawing inspiration from folk songs, Western pop, Hawaiian music, and even Latin American dance rhythms. The easy interplay between Ade's bright, relaxed vocals and the cushion of harmonized back-ups is only one of many dialogues within any given piece: rhythms converse with melodies, electric instruments respond to acoustic, and drums communicate in several, dizzyingly intricate tongues. The complexity and warmth here--strengthened by excellent performances and production--make RETURN one of King Sunny Ade's strongest collections.
