Album Notes Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass, bass pedals); Alex Lifeson (electric & acoustic guitars, synthesizer); Neil Peart (drums, percussion, electronic percussion). Aditional personnel: John Rutsey (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Seven years after Rush's first "best of" compilation was issued, the two-CD CHRONICLES, a new pair of discs was released as a replacement, RETROSPECTIVE, VOL. 1 (1974-1980) and RETROSPECTIVE, VOL. 2 (1981-1987). RETROSPECTIVE is a sonically improved collection of all of the band's best-known songs that also includes a number of the band's more recherche tracks that were overlooked on CHRONICLES. Rush's work in the '70s is held in high regard by metalheads and prog-rock enthusiasts. Beginning as a Led Zeppelin sound-alike early on ("Finding My Way," "Fly By Night," "Anthem"), the trio gradually re-invented itself as a sci-fi inspired metal band ("2112 Overture," "Temples of Syrinx"). By the late '70s, Rush was fast becoming one of the most popular rock bands of the time, helped by radio favorites like "Closer to the Heart" and "The Trees." The virtuosity of the instrumental "La Villa Strangiato" demonstrates why musicians have always revered the trio's chops. By the beginning of the '80s, Rush was improving its songwriting skills, as evidenced by two of the band's most popular songs, "Freewill" and "Spirit of the Radio." | Find errors in the product description? Reviews The disc is excellent because it covers the more "progressive" early years of Rush and some fans are mainly fans of this period of Rush's career so that is why I would recommend, even though I like all phases of the bands existence. Some notable tracks are missing (Working Man, A Passage to Bangkok) but overall it's a great value and fantastic music too. Review ID: 10000000008439200 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 04/23/08 by: I guess the product is ok - for a greatest hits kind of format.I do not like writting reviews so this may not be any help to others. This is a good cd to give to someone who does not know Rush's music as there are several cuts off of several albums. I do not like re-mastering and I do not like remastered products- but I guess that is technology for ya. I do not support "bootleggers" out to make a buck off of a Band's name and hard work. This collection though truly warrents an excellent review. This CD is a look back at the early days of Rush. This sometimes be a hard to find piece is a must for any Rush fan. It was intended to compliment the Cronicals Collection. If you know early Rush, you already know how great this collection is. From the masterful drumming of Niel, the blazing hands of Alex and the unmistakible voice of Geddy, this collection represents their early best. If you are a fan or know someone who is, buy this collection! Review ID: 10000000002492870 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
