Fear not; despite the high percentage of music-biz progeny in That Dog, this band is no Wilson Phillips. That Dog includes Petra and Rachel Haden, daughters of legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden (the prolific jazzman also spawned Spain frontman Josh Haden), along with record producer Lenny Waronker's daughter Anna. We've come to expect that kind of breeding to produce toothless, cookie-cutter MOR, but That Dog, which also includes drummer Tony Maxwell, turns out to be a proficient practitioner of melodic modern rock.
That Dog's third album features 13 well-crafted pop songs spiced up with a healthy dose of punky insouciance and crunchy guitar riffs. The sound is equal parts Bangles jangle and arch, Elastica-style alt-rock overdrive. Songs like "I'm Gonna See You" and "Being With You" provide a combination of sweetness and edge that sets the band apart from the rest of the pack.
