RESURRECTION was nominated for the 2000 Billboard Latin Music Award for Rock/Fusion Album of the Year. This is Chris Perez' RESURRECTION, widower of beloved, slain Tejano-pop queen Selena. For those who saw the latent rocker in him during his years as guitarist in Los Dinos, this recording represents the flowering of that impulse. It's a pop/rock studio extravaganza, with invited guests ranging from Mariachi Sol De Mexico and the punky horn section from Voodoo Glow Skulls to members of the illustrious rock outfit Cheap Trick. Saw-toothed hard rock meets melodic love-pop and a Santana-style rhythm section on these poignant songs of love, loss, longing, and healing. They ultimately form something of an epic as Perez addresses himself, Selena, and the whole world in his various stages of emotional healing. Vocalist John Garza conveys it all with an even-tempered grace that lends power to the lyrics without making unnecessary mush. In keeping with the band's Tex-Mex roots, several tunes are offered in both English and Spanish. The slow, soft "Agua Bendita" ("Holy Water") is pure romantic splendor, featuring lovely stretches of organ, electric piano, Perez' woeful picking, and John Garza's harmonized declarations. "Master Plan" builds a rock masterpiece out of violins, Perez' hard-hitting multi-layered guitars, and a triumphant message of survival.
