Rescue Dawn (DVD, 2009, Movie Cash)

A GREAT Vietnam War movie starring Christian Bale (The Dark Knight,
Equilibeium, The Machinist, 3:10 to Yuma, etc) as Dieter Dengler in
a true story. Dengler is assigned to the USS Ranger aircraft carrier
in 1965, when on his first bombing mission prior to major US involvement
in the war- he is shot down while attacking a target in Laos. After
evading the VC and supporters for several days. He is captured and
taken to a prison camp in the jungles of Laos. There he meets 6 fellow
prisoners who have worked or flown for the CIA and also been captured.
Dengler proceeds to plan an escape-but first has to talk his fellow
POWs into going along-first problem-they have been in the POW camp for
so long, they are a nuts. After clearing that hurdle, the escape takes
place but only one of his prisoner friends - end up with Dengler- that
being Duane played by Steve Zahn (Sahara, You Got Mail, A Perfect Getaway,
etc). Together they encounter the jungle dangers- leeches, snakes, bug,
and disease - together while trying to get to Thailand. The prison camp
was bad-but the jungle is worse and the movie accurately portrays all the
hardships and decisions they must make. Director Werner Herzog is a German
director who has mostly limited his films to documentaries- such as Grizzly
Man which was popular in the US. Here he does an excellent job though of
captureing the hardships of war and the jungle. The movie was awarded
the Independent Spirit Award (for independent movies in 2006) and is a top
grade movie that war movie lovers will enjoy, as well as suspense movie
and action and adventure devotees will love also. This movie will give most
people a very good evenings enjoyment and entertainment if you are not
weak of stomach-since scenes of eating maggots, picking leeches off his
body, eating a raw snake (while alive),etc- are in the movie. GREAT flix!!

This isn't just based on a true story, it's a remake of Werner Herzog's 1997 documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly. German-born Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale) has longed to pilot a plane since he was a boy. When he joins the US Navy during the Vietnam War, he gets his wish. Then he's shot down over Laos. The whole movie follows his experiences in a Vietcong prison camp. There he meets other prisoners - most notably a character played by Steve Zahn (who is amazing in a role much more serious than those in his past movies). The movie is filmed much like a documentary - with fade aways and individual experiences from Dieter's experiences in the camp. The music by Klaus Badelt is stunning and only adds to the atmosphere of loneliness, isolation, and finally hope.

What can I say, Christian Bale is in this film, that should be all the persuasion you need to buy it.

this movie is absolutely gold! amazing cast, christian bale does his finest work and very believable. One downside though, why no oscar nominations for rescue dawn or christian bale??? ridiculous if you ask me. This movie is a must see, when the movie finished i was struck with silence, it left me in awe. beautiful movie~!

ITS ABOUT THE VIETNAM WAR, WE COLLECT THESE KINDS OF MOVIES. IT WAS GREAT IT WAS A TRUE STORY.MORE PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH THESE SO THEY CAN SEE WHAT PRICE SOME PEOPLE PAYED FOR THERE FREEDOM.

Just a real good movie.Bought it because of word of mouth . others said it was good so i wanted to see for myself. and it was priced at a good price

It was insightful, more so than many movies about those now historical times. We bought it because we saw the last 1/4th of it on TV and knew we'd likely enjoy the first 3/4s of it. We surely did!

I bought this movie because the price was excellent, and it promised it was a sealed DVD, which it was. I don't like to buy or rent used DVD because they will mess up your DVD player. The shipping was really fast and packaging great. I highly recommend this DVD from this seller. The movie is crisp, clear, and knowing you will get a great deal for a new authentic movie not a pirated form. just simply AWESOME!!!!

the movie was very good. it has good acting , a lot of action. well written and directed.when this movie came out ,i wanted to see it. when it was available in dvd i bought it.i recommend this film very hightly.

So good! Its hard for me to believe that anyone could seriously give this under 4 and a half stars. Sure some scenes could have been done differently, story could have been told differently, the ending could have been different, etc. But the fact of the matter is that this is a true story, told truthfully by a dedicated director and preformed by dedicated actors. Some of the scenes were shot in a way where it feels like whats going on is real. As if you're watching it happening live feed on cnn. The story is amazing and sad but sometimes throws in the comedy. Besides all the other fantastic actors, Steve Zahn really gets my respect for this one. Rescue Dawn if definitely on my top ten war movie's list.

EXCELLENT movie...All you guys will love this movie.Based on a true story...Spin-off from a movie called "Little Deter wants to Fly" another really good movie...Must see both since they are about the same guy....

After reading the book "Escape From Laos" and watching the DVD "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" I found "Rescue Dawn" tracked pretty well.

Good war picture. I enjoyed it. I think most people would enjoy it as I did.
Would recommend it to anyone. Good acting, good scenery, good true story.

The movie was a little slow at first, but picked up once the captives were able to make their way out of the prison camp. The dialog was a little weak and some parts dragged on longer than it should have.
Because I saw the extras before watching the actual movie, I was able to appreciate the movies' captivating scenery.
What kept me interested in the movie was that it was based on actual events and I was curious to see how a POW endured the capture and treatment leading up to his rescue.

This is an amazing movie about men being held in a Laotian prison camp and their ultimate escape. Though some liberties were admittedly taken with the details, as most movies that are "true" stories usually do, it remains true to the spirit of the events. I appreciate the actors commitment to the storytelling: a story not about war but about the will to survive under the worst of circumstances. People who are going through difficult times would find inspiration in this film. Rescue Dawn "scrateches where it itches".

This sucks! I love Vietnam flicks, but this is the single worst movie on the subject. It portrays a POW's escape from an enemy prison camp, and It's completely false in every way. First, the movie shows the prisoners freely speaking to each other at any given time. I have NEVER read an account of this happening. Up until shortly before their release in 1973, they were NOT allowed to speak to each other. Second, the main character is seen laughing throughout almost the entire movie. The NV would have wiped that smile off of his face within a matter of hours. Third, they were subjected to 10X cruelty and depravation than the movie portrays. Again, false and inaccurate. Avoid!!!!
