Satire is always brilliant

Good satire is nearly impossible to find these days, unless you are willing to read old school authors like Mark Twain or Alexander Pope. As good as these gentlemen may be, they are no longer contemporary, and that's where Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) steps in.
While this series of books may be aimed at children, it contains enough modern and literary satire that an adult would probably enjoy it more than a child. In fact, the generally gloomy and gothic feel of the book probably is unhealthy for a child without parental supervision, but is still hilarious and interesting.
Each book is short and contains a repeating formula. However, unlike the formulas in Days of Our Lives or Friends, Handler uses the formula to his advantage and mocks the formula format and uses the differences from book to book to draw attention to certain issues or social standpoints.
The entire series is well worth buying, so the second book is worthy of your interest and money.
