"Overall, Hobson's 1991 Lyell Lectures, admirably rewritten, elegantly produced and well illustrated with 87 plates, deserve nothing but gratitude. Intellectual, personal, commercial and other interrelations are handled with a prodigious command of closely knit detail. The treatment of Grolier, the first full one for almost a century, is an immense advance in depth and breadth on its predecessors; it is supplemented by a revision of the late H. M. Nixon's catalogue of Grolier bindings, arranged by workshop. Hurtado de Mendoza gets his due, for the first time, in a perceptive and comprehensive general essay, supported by the first catalogue of printed books surviving from his collection and a transcript of the Venetian catalogue of his Greek manuscripts.....[This is] a satisfying piece of high-level cultural and intellectual history."
