Maher handles the subject of religion with all the respect and dignity it so richly deserves - somewhere between not much and nothing. Where Mark Twain tickled religion with the feather of humor, and Sinclair Lewis smacked it with the hammer of hypocrisy, Maher combines these traditions with his own understated insight, by letting "the Clown" show you that he has no clothes on.
Those who like this might also like the more documentry movies "Marjoe" or "The God Who Wasn't there", and the feature-length movie "The Passover Plot". For the darker side of religion, one might want to read "Holy Hatred" and "Holy Horror", both by James Haught.

Just when you thought Bill Maher couldn’t get any more politically incorrect, he goes and makes a movie like “Religulous.” Despite the controversy it’s sparked, however, the documentary isn’t as un-PC as many are making it out to be. Sure, Maher skewers much of the free world on the utter ridiculousness of religion (hence the title, which is a play on the two words), but he never once suggests that God doesn’t exist. He might allude to it several times, but “Religulous” isn’t about denying God's existence – it's about getting the 16% minority of non-believers that Maher has aimed the film at to stand up and make their voices heard. As a subscriber of the "I don't know" theory, Maher is clearly playing it safe, but that doesn't make "Religulous" any less funny, because the comedy speaks for itself.
“Religulous” follows Bill Maher as he travels across America and the rest of the world interviewing people about their religious faith. No stone is left unturned as the political humorist grills everyone from wealthy ministers in $2000 suits to a senior Vatican priest who comically points out that in Italy, Jesus Christ is sixth on the list of saints people pray to.

Everyone should watch this movie no matter their religion. A viewer will learn a lot about many religions and begins to question all of them, which is good when it is difficult to be certain. Watch this movie with an open mind and you will enjoy it and the conversation pieces you will get from it. The only thing I did not like about was that Bill was kind of intrusive on religious groups. For example, he interupted a Truck Driver's Chapel to question their beliefs. Those people just wanted to worship and weren't prepared for an argument. But I guess that is what documentaries have to do. I mean people who are certain about their religion do not generally want to argue religion unless they are winning.

Can't even buy this movie in our town because no one is open minded and willing to think for themselves. Only believe what you've been told since you were born is the motto here. This movie is fact based and honest. Fantastic to see that someone has a mind of their own and can point out the ridiculous way people behave when religion is involved. Good for you Mr. Maher!!!! Keep pushing people to research and think for themselves.

Religulous is a very perceptive and comical film surrounding why religious beliefs no matter how different, are all the same. Its a great film which analyzes such beliefs as Islam, Buddist, Jewish, Christian, Catholic for example and takes a spin on why does one denominate themselves as such and searching for the answers behind the bible and its mysteries.
This film plays a vital role in how faith plays a role in human life, and questioning ourselves unlocks many possibilities. Could life as we know it just be Religulous ?

Aggressive style but very face on challenge of the key tenets of major world religions. It makes you think how many contradictions and irationality exists in all major world faiths and the cost we are paying living under a mostly religious society. Should be a must see dvd/movie at schools to help adolescents choose their decision to follow or not a particular faith or simply go secular.

Simply amazing looks into the real religious aspect of life. I would not reccomend this movie to anyone who is overly religious because it does questions all your beliefs and will critize what you think you know.
If you are not religious and or have questions this movie is for you it is a funny, fun and interesting perspective on the different types of religions of the world.

Exactly what you would expect from Bill Maher. Informative, thought provoking, yet funny, at the same time. If you don't like questions about your religion, don't watch this. But, if you enjoy a good debate, this is a must see.

Unfortunately I never saw this in theaters since the ones near where I live are pro-religious fanatics and banned them out of theaters here. This movie was really underrated in my opinion. No one talked about it much and I believe taht was due to the fact that personal belief got in the way of a good movie.
As I said it was not allowed in my local theaters which really annoyed me but now that it's out on dvd I will watch just like how al those so-called "religious fanatics" will behind closed doors because that's the only place where they feel safe and secure. They'll preach about the word of god and sinners and such yet when they get home and kick off those shoes they become the very "sinners" that they were preaching to earlier. Hypocrites.

Lois - "Oh my god he(Mel Gibson) just walked right over the edge!"
Peter - "Of course Lois! CHRISTIANS don't BELIEVE in gravity."
Whoever doesn't laugh at that and this movie is a prude. Go watch Leave it to Beaver and say hello to Lincoln in the 1800's then old folks.

Love the movie...unfortunately I had to view it at the theater. The sell for whom I expected to receive the DVD stiffed me and about 20 other buyers. Purchase is now in Paypal dispute resolution.

Being an open minded, free thinker, I knew I would enjoy this documentary. I have been a fan of Bill Maher for several years, and agree with 90% of his views. Bill exposes some religious myths and beliefs, some of which are actually funny. It is interesting to see how people react to questions regarding their religious beliefs. Some react with anger, humor and others are at a loss of words. Entertaining, to say the least!

This is Religion at it's best! This docu/comedy is too Funny and really makes you wonder? I loved it and give it an "EXCELLENT" However' it may not be for everyone especially those whom are not open minded. Mr. Maher has really outdone himself! I can't wait for part "2" LOL

Bill Mahr goes where 'angels fear to tread' thoroughly entertaining and presented in way that only Bill can do! He brings to the (last supper?) table all that's rediculous in believing in the supernatural. If you're religious buy it, if not still buy it!

To be honest when I bought this movie I believed it would be a documentary putting all religions to the test. It really didn't, Bill Maher was basically bullying everyone. You also would miss a lot of what was being said by the Religious leaders. Maher would cut them off and try to put them on a different point. Basically the catch them off gaurd and hope they sound stupid. You only saw what made Bill look smart. He would hardly let anyone finish what they were saying. He was always on the defensive trying to shoot holes in the person's story. If you have any religious beliefs then this movie is not for you. If you do not like any God or consider yourself an Athiest, then you would like this because it is geared to making religious people look stupid and uneducated.
Bottom line this movie is not about discovering and comparing religions. It is Bill Maher fighting everyone all movie. A waste of money.
