When it comes to roots reggae, there are few figures more iconic than Jimmy Cliff. Next to Bob Marley, he's done more than anyone else to popularize reggae outside of his native Jamaica. His musical and theatrical performance in the film THE HARDER THEY COME was what broke Cliff through to audiences worldwide, and the key Cliff track from that movie's soundtrack "The Harder They Come" is here, as are many of the other high points from Cliff's long, prolific career. "Sitting Here in Limbo," one of Cliff's most loved songs, approaches the idea of living in a psychic purgatory with a mixture of hard-won optimism and realistic edge, while "You Can Get it if You Really Want" and "Many Rivers to Cross" further explore the function of idealism in the face of inescapable tribulation. When you mate these heady philosophical conflicts with an impossibly infectious melodic sense and some of the best roots reggae production work ever, you begin to understand the nature of both Cliff's genius and his popularity.
