Reefer Madness - The Movie Musical (DVD, 2005)

I had never laughed so hard! If you have seen the original 1930s government propaganda film, this is a must see. The satire is witty at times, but towards the end it gets a bit over the top. This is a broadway-quality musical and the songs leave your toes tapping and your fingers snapping.

A very satirical comedy that keeps you laughing throughout the whole movie. Very dramatic acting with an amazing performance by Ana and Christian. Provacative and funny. I've never seen a musical like this before.

This movie is based on the original 1936 propaganda film "Reefer Madness," a government release warning young people (through their parents) about the dangers of smoking marijuana. In the original film, pot-smoking lead to insanity, an overactivesexdrive, and homicidal tendencies. The musical version takes all this several steps further, with a wonderful sense of satire, some wonderful (and catchy) songs, and a cameo by Jesus himself (the ultimate authority on rejecting sin, hey?)
The cast is great, and includes Cristian Campbell (brother of Neve) reprising his role from the off-broadway prouction. Alan Cummings is brilliant as the government man, narrator, and several other roles. Cummings brings tyhe same quiet menace to the gov't man as he did to the emcee in Caberet. Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) plays the sweetly naive girl next door to a 't'. Ana Gasteyer and Steve Weber work great together, and John Kassir as the incurable dope fiend and Amy Spanger as the Pot House slut do their best to steal any scene in which they appear.
The DVD is a treat, containing cast interviews and commentary, as well as the original movie, which should definately be view before watching the musical version.
All-in-all, this movie is a lot of fun to watch, the acting is wonderful, and the adaptation of the original propaganda film to a musical is very well done. Perhaps most impressive is the way the filmakers managed to simultaneously create a nostalgia piece (though nostalgia for the paranoia of our radically anti-communist past may be tough) as well as a movie that speaks to the modern day. The government man's method of bullying people into believing even the most absurd "facts" about marijuana, even after confronted with scientific evidence to the contrary, certainly has parallels in the modern day.

This has become one of my new favorites. It was actually recommended by an ex (so I bought it for him) but he left before it came in *shrug*. I now have a GREAT Movie!!

You don't have to like musicals to love this story about the DANGERSSSS!!!! of smoking reefer. Laugh at all the 420 jokes and remember the good old days of REEFER MADNESS that you used to go through

Loved this movie and it was a great price and speedy service so i was really pleased. Its a great comedy that satires parental views on drug restrictions. It shows you how people can be swayed by media.

I first watched this movie in college with some friends. We all loved it! (Granted we were all theatre kids with a love for musicals and anything out of the ordinary) So yeah, it was definitely a movie for us! I think in one weekend alone, we watched it probably 4 times. The songs are catchy and the actors do a great job portraying their characters. Because of the nature of the movie, it's definitely not for the young kids. It's a movie for after they go down at night. Hope you like it too!

I really liked the price of the DVD and it came really fast. The only problem however, is it doesn't always work properly. I know this is a disc issue and not the sellers problem though because the disc was new. It just kind of sucks. I really didn't want to go through the hassle of sending it back either. Overall, the service was great though.

Follows the same story-line as the original 30's film of the same title, but oh, so much more fun!
Musical numbers, young love, mary-jane (and mary-lane), crazed 'weed-fiends' galore, and lots and lots of marijuana! hehehe

I got this because my daughter is a huge Veronica Mars fan and so, by extension, a Kristen Bell fan. This is quite a bit more adult oriented, but fine for a teenager. The whole film is a hoot. Great singing/dancing and some real fun tunes. The overall tone is irreverent, subversive and broadly satirical. Having a healthy suspicion of "authority" is a good thing.

I loved this movie! I saw it several years ago on Showtime and really enjoyed it--and finally bought it on DVD. It makes fun of the hysteria generated in the 1930's over the use of, Marijuana, Maryjane, The Reefer, Pot.... (Hysteria then...how about still!?) Anyway, this is yes, the musical version and it's terrific. Check out some of the songs on Youtube from this movie and you'll get a good idea of what you're in for. A great cast also with Alan Cummings and Neve Campbell (she stars in a terrific dance scene). This movie never seemed to get any press, however, it was turned into a stage play and actually went to Broadway, but alas-- opened in September 2001, so it was doomed from the beginning. Check it out when you can-you'll be glad you did--it also helps if you saw the original G-d awful movie from the 1930's, because there is quite a bit of reference there.

Great musical parody! Acting was great, especially Kristen Bell, who I've never been particularly fond of. Definately worth watching if you like tongue in cheek musicals. Don't even have to like musicals really, just sarcasm and political humor.

The movie is campy, wayyyyyyyyy to long. But, has some good music, and some good scenes. I knew what I was buying. Just had to have it. Own a copy of the "origional"....and had to add to the collection.

This is my favorate movie..it is very funny and the songs are hilarious. I have watched it many times and still enjoy it.

If you're a fan of musicals and/or obscure movies, see this one. Reefer Madness is not only tongue-in-cheek hysterical, but it's got fantastic music, and a great cast to pull it off. The biggest problem is the fact that a cast album doesn't exist.

If you were looking for an insane, over the top, campy, spoof then this is IT. Alan Cummings is BRILLIANT in it, playing parts from a conservative federal representative, to FDR to a satanic goat man. The vocal performances were admirable all around.

Now i'm not saying that i'm crazy, but I probably am. I'm not saying the case of Reefer Madness is crazy, but they probaby are. The sheer madcap hilarity that ensuses from this update to the ancient drug propaganda film of the same name is a knee-slapper of a good time.

Favorite moments include the opening musical number, the heaven lounge and the devil's attempts to sway our protagonist to the dark side of the hemp.

If your looking for a good laugh with some of your friends, or just want to wind down after a rough day, pop this bad boy in and have yourself a gay ol time.

"Reefer Madness" won't win any awards for stunning song writing, choreography, or acting, but none of this holds it back from being an outstanding B-musical. If you're a Rocky Horror fan, this is a must, as this charming interpretation of the cult-followed 1936 propaganda film could easily be hailed as the "Evil Dead" of musicals.

The film begins with an official-type lecturer (Alan Cumming) warning parents of the dangers from marijauna, complete with a song and dance number including zombified students and propagandist intellect. He begins the story by showing a film reel featuring two ill-fated students, Jimmy Harper (Christian Campbell) and Mary Lane (Kristen Bell). Through song and dance, the colorful yet campy characters portray their innocence and the time they live in, 1936.

The train goes off the track, however, when no-gooder Jack (Steven Weber) introduces the reefer to young Jimmy. The drug lures him into a wild orgy full of grass skirts, coconut bras, ten foot bongs, and Alan Cumming dressed as a goatman. Jimmy's life becomes a trainwreck itself as he resorts to stealing from church donations, only to be met by Jesus in person for a song!

I'd hate to give away more of the story, but if you're on the fence about this movie, Showtime's website offers two clips to check out. The songs are catchy and well done, the choreography fits, and everything is well rounded in this film. The slightest of problems is that the film feels like it was going to end once or twice, but it keeps on going. However, the clever jokes of 1930's brainwashing, racism, and many other things keep the film going strong.
