Matthew Kelly's "Rediscovering Catholicism, Journeying Toward Our Spiritual North Star," is a book that our local Catholic faith-sharing group chose to begin a series of book studies on religion and spirituality.
Several of our 14 members had previously read this 2002 volume, and convinced the others to opt for this. Once selected, Rediscovering Catholicism was dissected into seven sections for seven evening sessions. Our group meets twice per month, so this kept us occupied for 3 and 1/2 months.
Rediscovering Catholicism is a contemporary believer's examination of the history and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The author, born and raised in Australia, at times describes his upbringing in the Church there and his practice of the faith now in America.
Kelly's book offers practical guides for attempts for growth in holiness, purpose-in-life, and spirituality. He encourages the reader to find during each day the time for prayer and study, and to formulate resolutions to try to make oneself better.
Throughout the book Kelly cites how "change is necessary and inevitable" on a personal basis and on a full-scale Church level. Courage to change is beneficial in practicing one's faith, "Our lives change when our habits change."
Kelly's writing style is flowing, engaging with anecdotes, and readily understandable. The format of this book lends itself to individual enrichment or to group study and discussion. This book is recommended as a good while brief (313 pages) overview of the contributions of Catholic Christianity.
The author urges today's reader to rediscover the striving toward holiness that motivated the early Church and its members to live the Christian life and to thrive.
