When it comes to Sports rivalries, nothing quite tops the Yankees vs Red Sox and when these two teams play, they play for almost total blood. Other sports rivals like Florida/Florida State in NCAA football can be that sports bitter rivalry. The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers in the NFL. The Montreal Canadians and Toronto Mapleleafs in hockey, Duke and North Carolina in NCAA College basketball.
But too top all these bold rivals in sports, it has to be the Red Sox/Yankees. These teams have been very bitter rivals since the early 1920's when the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees and just about everything else to keep from folding after the Red Sox had been a dominant team first part of the 20th Century, then they fizzled because of financial problems.
That began the Yankees domination of baseball for the 20th Century. Anytime a World Series was played, it seemed like the Yankees were always in the Fall Classic.
In 1939, things began to shift abit. A young player by the name of Ted Williams made his major league debut, and the Red Sox got a little better. A friendship between Ted Williams and Yankees outfielder Joe Dimaggio had become very good friends!
The Yankee/ Red Sox wars really burned up in 1948,1949 & 1950 with the Red Sox edging out on the last day in 1948 the Yankees only to loose a play off game to the Cleveland Indians for the American League Pennant.
After this: The rivalry died off in the 1950's and 1960's until the 1970's saw a whole new generation of players come onto the scene, and the fiery fuse was lit again.
Players like Thurman Munson, Roy White and Bobby Murcer wore the pin stripes for the Yankees. Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk and Jim Rice and Dwight Evans for the Red Sox made the 1970's a time to remember.
In 1978, the Yankees and the Red Sox met for a one game play off for the Eastern Division Pennant, the Yankees won that game 5 to 4. And the rivalry took a decade off for the 1980's!
But never until the 1990's and into the new millium had the rival has ever been so torched!
In 1999, the Red Sox and Yankees met for the American League Pennant with the Yankees winning in 5 games over the Red Sox, all this made possible by baseball expanding the play off format by adding a wild card team for the 4th play off spot. Baseball split into six divisions adding more to the play offs.
The bitterness was felt even more when popular players from the Red Sox such as pitcher Roger Clemens and 3rd baseman Wade Boggs jumped ship and joined the Yankees and ended up winning a World Series Championship with the Yankees!
Overall in 2003, the Yankee beat the Red Sox in a dramatic 7 games series with the Yankees winning the pennant on a dramatic bottom of the 12th homerun by Aaron Boone, after the Red Sox had a 5 run lead as late as the 7th inning.
2004 saw the Red Sox come from 0-3 deficient to rally over the Yankees and win the American League pennant and go on to the World Series and Beat the Cardinals in order for the Red Sox to win their first World Series Championship since 1918.
In 2005 the Red Sox made the play offs but were swept by the Chicago White Sox ( who would win their first World Series Championship since 1919) and the Yankees were swept by the LA Angels.
2006 saw popular player Johnny Damon jumped ship and join the Yankees.
This dvd does provide an indebt look at how this rivalry was formed and why most sports critics find it the very best and bitter rivalry in all of sports.
