Red Sonja (DVD, 2004)

This movie is HORRIBLE, but if you are a Conan fan like myself, it HAS to be in your collection. You would think that the heroine of the first Conan wouldnt be cast as the antagonist of this movie. Truly poor, but... It is Conan and Red Sonja.

I was pleased with the service.... except that it took so long to get the movie... it was out of stock, which is understandable. When I called the company everyone there was very nice, and was eager to help. I would like to order some more products from this company again.

ITS A GREAT MOVIE I WISH ARNOLD WOULD HAVE MADE MORE CONAN MOVIES. I THINK THEY DID A REALY GOOD JOB BRINGING THE BOOK TO FILM.

Even though Ah-nold is the big name in this film, it is not even about him & he appears in only slightly more than half the movie. This movie is about mythical sword & sorcery comic book heroine Red Sonja, played by then newcomer Brigitte Neilsen in her film depute. The tall long legged Nielsen sports a wonderfully skimpy costume, but that is pretty much the only appeal for her. She also sports a flame red mullet & is painfully too thin for a master swordswoman & warrior making her character somewhat unbelievable. Her dialog is also a bit weak, not a good thing when playing opposite thick accented Ah-nold who was also in his acting infancy.

So with it's 2 main actors not really that strong on dialog, how good can this film be? Fair at best! The plot holds too many holes that are either weakly explained or not explained at all! We start out with a tale of how Red Sonja came to be told by a ghostly figure who give Sonja her power. We don't know who this person is or why she chose Sonja? Her voice will appear once more when Sonja picks a sword & that is it. We quickly move on to a temple where a bunch of female priestesses & warriors are about to seal a mighty talisman away from the world forever. We know why & basically what the talisman is, but beyond that, we are told very little. All are slain by the minions of Queen Gedren who wants the talisman for herself so she can rule the world. Sonja's sister escapes, but is wounded & found by Ah-nold's character Kalidor. She dies telling Sonja that the talisman must be reclaimed & destroyed. & so begins the great quest. Along the way they pick up the spoiled diminutive juvenile Prince Tam & his faithful bodyguard Falkon. The two try to, but fail to offer some comic relief. The group face many perils on their way to a final face off against Gedren at her palace.

There is not much of a supporting cast to go with Nielsen & Ah-nold. Sandahl Bergman plays Gedren in a return from Ah-nold's Conan films, but she is hidden away behind a gold mask, a black wig & an unflattering costume which hides her luscious Conan era figure. It's just as well for she has dropped 20lbs or so & is even thinner than Nielsen! Her acting skills also seem to have diminished along with her body! The only other recognizable face is Ronald Lacey who you will recognize as the Gestapo agent from Raiders of the Lost Ark. He plays Gedren's right hand.

The fighting scenes are quite good! It's at least one area where some splurging was done teaching the cast some good sword play. The film unfortunately does not look as good scenery wise as most of the film appears to have been shot on sound stages with weak special effects & cheap scenery.

So, we have poor acting, good action sequences, weak special effects, cheap scenery, awful dialog & a story full of holes. Why buy this movie or even watch it? It does make a nice addition to an Ah-nold collection or just to add it the Conan saga. Nielsen looks awesome in her costume! &...uh....well, I guess that is it! It's better than a lot of the fantasy films of it's era, but falls well short of others. Better yet, just watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy instead!

Love the movie. I have always wanted this movie but just never bought it. Now that i have it I love it. Can't wait for the remake.

Bridgitte Neilson is flame-haired heroine Sonja, leading a glorious quest in a mystical land where fortress walls have faces, dinosaur bones form a bridge, a lethal mechanical serpent writhers, swarming minions follow a vile queen and where heroes lay claim to legend. Arnold Schwarzenegger is also in the movie.

The price for the film was fantastic! The movie also came in a very timely manner. I recommend this seller!

The movie was shipped in it's original packaging and had no damage. Full length DVD no copies or bootleg. Only wish the dvd was shipped faster. Other than the slow shipping no complaints.

If you like the Conan movies then you'll most likely enjoy this one. It's similar although it has that 80's movie 'feel' to it. The video effects are definitely a touch up from Conan. The story is descent but could be a bit more in depth. If you're an Arnold fan then it's worth watching!

I loved that the movie was in dvd format. It was the kind of movie I grew up watching on vhs back in the late 70' early 80's. I disliked that it was not digitally mastered. I decided to buy it because I could not find it anywhere else.

I loved this movie when I was a kid and I have been looking for it for years. This was the only place I could find it and I was very excited.

This movie is one of the greatest movies of the 80's for action, blood, gore, and sorcery. This movie, Like the Conan Movies, was an all time fav for many people and will continue to be for several years on.

I LIKE WATCHING BRIGITTE NIELSEN GO FULL OUT AND STRECH OUR IMAGINATION BEYOND PARENTAL GUIDENCE AND BORDERTHE PERVERSENESS OF UNRATED. THE GOOD POINTS ARE YOU CAN SEE BRIGITTE NEILSEN WORKING WITH ARNOLD SHWARTZANEGGER FOR THE FIRST TIME BUT THE FILM LACKED BRIGITTE NIELSEN'S EMOTION. AS I STATED EARLIER, I WOULD RATHER THE BRIGITTE NIELSEN THAT TAKES US DOWN INTO A DEEP PERVERSE UNRATED RIDE THAN THE PARAMETERS OF RED SONJA WENT. MAYBE I WANTED TO SEE BRIGITTE NEILSEN MORE THAN RED SONJA, OR BETTER YET THAT BRIGITTE NEILSEN WAS RED SONJA AND THEY HAD TO STICK TO THE SCRIPT AS OPPOSED TO SUPERIMPOSING BRIGITTE NEILSEN UNTIL YOU GET TO RED SOJNA.

Good movie however, I don't think it is as good as "Conan the Barbarian". I decided to buy it because the price was very reasonable and it was in brand new condition. I like the other Conan movies better.

Arnold is not Conan in this movie - he is Kalidor - and in it for about 10 minutes. It was not intended as a sequel to Conan - just the same genre with a character by the same creator as Conan. Also, the first Conan was directed by John Milius, not Richard Fleisher. Schwarzenegger made this one in a deal with the producers to get out of making a third Conan.
As far as this movie goes - it's not very well made - but is still super enjoyable if your into cool cheeze and fun bad movies. It's a lot closer to Conan the Destroyer (which Fleisher did direct) than Conan the Barbarian. Brigitte Nielsen is hot with her mullet and fit the role pretty well - they should cast her in a bit role in the new one they're making for 2008.
