MGM was originally developing "The Red-Headed Woman" as a project for Greta Garbo. Barbara Stanwyck and Clara Bow were other possible leads for the picture. Clara Bow passed on the part because MGM's offer was tied into a long term contract.
Marcel DeSano was the original choice to direct "The Red-Headed Woman." He was replaced by Jack Conway shortly before the cameras rolled.
Suggestive dialogue and shots of Jean Harlow had to be cut in order for the Hays Office to green light the project. Many local censors, however, demanded recuts during the film's distribution cycle, and many religious and civic leaders criticized the Hays Office for approving the film.
