Album Notes Personnel: Johnny Rivers (vocals, guitar); Joe Osborn (electric guitar, bass); James Burton, James Hendricks (guitar); Marty Paich (strings, horns); Larry Knechtel (keyboards); Hal Blaine (drums, percussion) All tracks have been digitally remastered. 1967's REALIZATION is entirely unlike anything which came before or after in Johnny Rivers' career. Aware of the changes occurring on Sunset Strip, where he'd had a residency at the famed Whiskey A-Go-Go since 1964, Rivers refurbished his sound, curtailing the blue-eyed soul in favor of a gently psychedelic blend of sunshine-pop harmonies, trippy guitar, and low-budget studio effects. In the process he created a faux-psychedelia album that's among the most interesting sonic artifacts of its time, up there with Sonny Bono's equally inauthentic INNER VIEWS. The choice of material is intriguing, including a rave-up version of the garage punk classic "Hey Joe" and an unusually rocking "Whiter Shade of Pale." Rivers would continue his psychedelic soul career at a remove by signing sunshine-pop supergroup the Fifth Dimension to his Soul City label, but REALIZATION is a remarkable one-off in Rivers' otherwise stylistically consistent career.
