Recorded live at a reunion concert in England in 1987.
Together since the '80s, the latter-day line-up of Fairport Convention (guitarist/singer Simon Nicol, bass player Dave Pegg, drummer Dave Mattacks, violinist Ric Sanders and multi-instrumentalist Martin Allcock) is heard here doing what it does best: performing spirited songs that draw from a heritage of jigs and reels filtered through contemporary folk-rock. Founding member Richard Thompson left the band fifteen years prior, but he is still a part of the Fairport blueprint. IN REAL TIME, a set which relies heavily on the band's original songwriting, features three of Thompson's songs, including a studio recording of the classic "Meet On The Ledge."
Because these musicians have positioned themselves within a tradition that dates back centuries, even such Fairport originals as "The Widow Of Westmoreland's Daughter" sound authentically ancient. Fairport Convention's musicians have embraced the 20th century as well, plugging in their instruments and cranking them up to a volume that can seemingly be heard across the barriers of time.
