Synopsis
In Ronald Reagan's own words, these diary entries provide an up-close and personal account of how the 40th president viewed his daily life, public and private. His love of his wife, Nancy; his relations with world leaders; his acerbic view of the press; and his encounters with everyday Americans comprise this record of the thoughts of "the great communicator," as he was called, and the three thousand days that made history. Historian David Brinkley assembled these entries and provides commentary.

Industry Reviews
"Complicated matters of state are reduced to their essence, jostling for prominence in the late president's mind with infinitely more mundane matters."
(05/03/2007)

"But what emerges above all from these entries is how sweet a man Reagan remained, despite a long life in the caustic worlds of Hollywood and politics."
(05/23/2007)

"Taken in all, [THE REAGAN DIARIES] paint a portrait of a president who was engaged by his job and had a healthy perspective on power."
(06/04/2007)

"[T]his volume tells us more about Ronald Reagan than many of his biographies. Besides which, not a few interpretive bits of gold are sprinkled amid the grit and gravel of diplomatic niceties, Congressional consultations and after-dinner entertainments."

A legend who never lost touch with real life

I really like Reagan. He and I were on different ends of the political spectrum when he was President. I was very young and full of fire and rebel without a brain self-righteousness. To sit down now, weary of life as I am and read such gentle prose, such real life recognition of small details in life, to read how much he loved his wife..to read how he viewed world affairs in such a confident no-nonsense manner..he was competitive and political but it was also centrist and based on the common good of man. I remember being 16 and spouting off to my father, the original capitalist about trickle down economics with such anger! Now, I read Reagan's words and feel strangely comforted and I miss the old days..crazy!! He should live on but I'm afraid his political party is dying. This book will touch you on many levels, his humanity will make you choke back some tears. His compassion for his press secretary when his own health was so precarious..he was an amazing man and few amazing men have the heart or insight to write anything down, they are too busy gobbling up life and people at an alarming rate. I want to be Reagan when I grow up. I would love to have his perspective - its my new goal.
