Publisher's Note A complicated novel of conflicts. "People are always at a razor's edge"; says an oriental proverb and that was the base the English Somerset Maugham in one of his last novels, where the protagonists are an intellectual young man and a girl who only longs to be rich. This conflict between mind and matter leads to a series of interesting developments, typical of the writer techniques, specialized in novels of well made plots that never lose interest. Each of the characters is a reflection of real-life and it is curious to see that the author never judges them even with all their faults and imaginable limitations. That explains why this novel, one of the last ones of the writer, has had so much popularity in the generations of young protesters in the middle of the 20th century.
