RAY OF LIGHT won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album and for Best Recording Package, and was nominated for Album Of The Year. "Ray Of Light" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Dance Recording and Best Short Form Music Video, and was nominated for Record Of The Year.
Relentlessly contemporary, RAY OF LIGHT pairs Madonna with producer William Orbit, an electronics wizard who has worked with major R&B acts and even such modern rockers as Blur and Depeche Mode. Reportedly, Madonna tried to snare Liam Howlett of high-strung techno-rockers the Prodigy into the project--Howlett claims to have turned her down. But the more dextrous, less in-your-face Orbit was probably a better choice anyway. He provides a dizzying array of soundscapes, incorporating everything from psychedelic-rock guitar to dub-reggae echo and cold, cutting techno beats for what critics are calling Madonna's most committed performance in years.
From the slow chill of the album's first single, "Frozen," to the disco-like title track, RAY OF LIGHT finds Madonna embracing the club beats that are her roots while still teetering on the edge of dance-club vogue. It also finds the singer, who has become a mother since her last studio album, in a long-untapped spiritual mode. When the inevitable comparisons are made to Madonna's previous standard-bearer, 1989's LIKE A PRAYER, that may well be the reason.

I like EVERYTHING about this cd! It was literally a "Ray of Light" (this album) which shone and broke the backlash of "Sex" and "Erotica" (THOSE TWO ARE ALSO SOME OF HER BEST!) The "Limited Edition" cd (of "Ray of Light") is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL BEYOND WORDS! WIth a 3-D effect that CAN NOT be enjoyed through pictures. I decided to buy this cd because I liked the cover and the fact that it is 1 of a limited 3000 quantities or so released. I didn't get the limited cd, I got a WORK OF ART! This is the great work of an absolutely AMAZING artist! The one, the only, the fabulous Madonna!

    - Love, Mr.Dj

      Madonnas best work to date
    Review created: 08/23/07

In 1998, we didn't know what to expect from Madonna since she had taken such a long break from her career (Last album was Bedtime stories 1994) to focus on her role dream role of Evita and new role as a mother. She came back more spiritual but just as hungry for commercial success. The songs were about her spiritual awakening. They were very personal and at the same time dancy with a new electronic edge that America was just discovering. Straight out of the box, the first single "FROZEN" was a tremendous success. In the UK, they got a unique single from the album called "DROWNED WORLD" which depicted the The follow up single "RAY OF LIGHT" too was a huge hit, released as a video single too and spawned Madonnas most honored song to date. Racking up tons of MTV VMA nominations for best video of the year and winning! She sept the 1998 awards show. Then came the amazingly passionate songs 'POWER OF GOODBYE" followed by "NOTHING REALLY MATTERS". It seemed every song was a hit and catchy and fun.

I would def. recommend this album, if you love music, you'll love RAY OF LIGHT!

I bought this cd because I study Kabbalah and this album is written around the time Madonna started Kabbalah. Since we all live in the on percentile I wanted to try and up my odds. I enjoy this album and my husban took it in the divorce.
