Album Notes A Static Lullaby: Dan Arnold (vocals, guitar); Joe Brown (vocals); Dane Poppin (bass guitar); Tyler Mahurin (drums). Personnel: Matt Wheeler, Greg Puciato (vocals). Audio Mixer: Steve Evetts. With some lineup and label tumult over the years, Chino Hills emo gunslingers A Static Lullaby have dealt with their share of adversity. Their second album for indie Fearless records finds them tearing into metal-tinged post-hardcore with a renewed vigor. Crunchy, diesel-powered riffs infuse almost every song without sacrificing melody or emotion, and the cleanly sung choruses balance out singer Joe Brown's tortured screams. "Bear Trap" boasts steamroller blues-metal riffs rolling along mercilessly, and "The Prestige" couples pile-driving guitar with dramatic, desperate vocals. Just to show it's not all business, they even do a surprisingly credible cover of Britney Spears's future funk hit, "Toxic," replacing the loopy blips and whirrs of her original with a crushing heaviness that suits the lyrics. A Static Lullaby has energy to burn, and RATTLESNAKE catches fire from its beginning.
