Thomas, Varlie Webb, Christine Steele, Rich Thomas, Tony Goddess, Chris Corsano. After years of gigging and self-releasing CD-Rs featuring marathon jams, Boston experimental collective the Sunburned Hand of the Man offers up a surprisingly conventional--by their skewed standards--label debut on RARE WOOD. While the loose, experimental feel is definitely here, RARE WOOD collects tracks from five completely different sessions in one place. While some still clock in over the 10-minute mark, RARE WOOD's tracks differ from each other greatly. "Easy Wind" is a dub vocal and bass breakdown; "Camel Breakwards" is an almost straight Middle Eastern jazz riff; "Buried Pleasure" is a banjo droner in 4/4 time. Since half the fun of SHOTM is the getting there, RARE WOOD can feel like a slideshow to a great vacation as opposed to the whole experience. While not their best release--for that try the live gem COMPLEXION--RARE WOOD captures many great moments by a truly unique band of weirdos.
