Publisher's Note
Here for the first time are recipes for all of Rao's fabulous classics - its famous marinara sauce, seafood salad, roasted peppers with pine nuts and raisins, baked clams, lemon chicken, chicken scarpariello, and on and on. The recipes are accompanied by photographs that recreate Rao's magic and testimonials from loyal Rao's fans - from Woody Allen to Beverly Sills. Here too is a brief history of the restaurant by Nicholas Pileggi and a Preface by Dick Schaap. Both will convince you that what you have in your hands is a national treasure, a piece of history, and a collection of the best Italian American recipes you will ever find.

Raos, the hundred-year-old restaurant with a mere ten tables tucked in a corner of East Harlem in what was once a legendary Italian neighborhood, is one of the most sought-after restaurants in all of Manhattan. Its tables are booked months in advance by regulars who go to enjoy what The New York Times calls its "exquisitely simple Italian cooking" from traditional recipes, many as old as Raos itself. You may not get a table at Raos, but now with this book you can prepare the best Italian home-style food in the world in your own kitchen. Here for the first time are recipes for all of Raos fabulous classics--its famous marinara sauce, seafood salad, roasted peppers with pine nuts and raisins, baked clams, lemon chicken, chicken scarpariello, and on and on.The recipes are accompanied by photographs that re-create Raos magic and testimonials from loyal Rao's fans--from Woody Allen to Beverly Sills. Here too is a brief history of the restaurant by Nicholas Pileggi and a Preface by Dick Schaap. Both will convince you that what you have in your hands is a national treasure, a piece of history, and a collection of the best Italian American recipes you will ever find.

Industry Reviews
"The book is loaded with nostalgic photographs, attractive pictures of food, accolades from celebrity customers....[T]he recipes are [not] tricky or laden with secret ingredients. In fact, they could not be more straightforward. This is a bible of Italian restaurant classics..."
New York Times - Florence Fabricant (04/29/1998)

"You get an appealing collection of Italian-American recipes..., not only old standbys like shrimp scampi, veal parmigiana, and pasta e fagioli but such less familiar traditional neighborhood dishes as risotto with veal sauce and fillet of sole with fennel and white wine."
Simple Cooking - John Thorne (09/19/1998)

      Good Italian Food

Do you want to cook like an Italian? This is your book. These are recipes that my grandmother and mother cooked for me when I was growing up. They are not fancy. Just plain good Italian-American fare. Make plenty of the sauce and freeze it, because you'll be using it for a lot of the dishes. Just good Italian food!
