Raising 3 sons, 2 with ADHD

We used this book (and the taped series) to help establish our parenting style. We raised 3 sons (now 22, 20, & 18), 2 with ADHD with the principles we learned from this. The whole time they were growing up when we were out in public people always commented on how well behaved they were. We learned to be consistent in how we handled misbehaviors. We didn't let things slide. We refused to let them use the ADHD as an excuse for unacceptable behavior. My oldest son's 4th grade teacher was amazed at how well behaved he was. All the other ADHD kids she had taught were used to running wild, their parents used the ADHD as an excuse to not properly parent their children.
I eased them into helping around the house gradually. For example: They first were responsible for stacking their briefs and putting them away. Later, I would leave a 3 stacks of freshly laundered clothes for them to put away in their closet. Later, I would seperate and lay flat 3 stacks of clothes & they would put them on hangers and hang in the closet. When they reached the age of 12 or so we gave them their own hamper. They became responsible for washing everything they wore. We did this to eliminate their quick clean-up solution, which was take all the clothes that I didn't finish putting away and throw them in the hamper!
They also learned how to cook for themselves .Now, we all take care of my 88 year old mother-in-law. She has been recently confined to a wheelchair due to multiple strokes and a heart attack. My boys all do their share with her. I know that they will have no problems taking care of their future wives after having babies or if they are sick.
I recently sent a hardback copy of this to my sister and brother-in-law who just adopted their 14 mo. old daughter from Khazakstan (spelling?).
