Movie Description
Myrna Loy shines as Lady Edwina Esketh, a young woman stranded in India who becomes the center of attention for a local aristocrat attempting to win her heart in this sweeping MGM romance. Tom Ransome (George Brent), a well-born womanizer, has been living a carefree life in India for several years. He and his closest friend, Major Rama Safti (Tyrone Power), spend leisure time contemplating India's uncertain future. But the tranquillity of Tom's simple life is disturbed by Fern Simon (Brenda Joyce), the flirtatious daughter of American missionaries. Fern wants Tom to help her escape her sheltered life by creating a sexual scandal. Later that night, at the maharajah's palace party, Tom sees Edwina, an old girlfriend who is now the titled wife of Lord Albert Esketh (Nigel Bruce). But no sooner are they reunited than Lady Edwina is up to her usual tricks. Attracted to Rama Safti, she pursues him even though Tom warns that her that Rama is completely dedicated to his medical practice. When a devastating natural disaster hits, everyone must reevaluate what is really important to them. Based on the novel by Louis Bromfield, THE RAINS CAME features dazzling Oscar-winning special effects, an outstanding cast, and solid direction from the always-dependable Clarence Brown.

This movie has two of my favorite classic film stars, Tyrone Power and Myrna Loy. I am not sure it got a lot of press at the time because it was a love story between an Indian Dr. and a bored American socialite. Power returns to India from America to treat his people. He is invited to some social functions, and meets Ms. Loy, but because things like this are taboo he keeps his distance. Loy pursues him, and its no denying he is attracted to her, but there is that "culture" thing again. The whole movie is lavishly set against the background of colonial India and the turmoil of the people. The tension between Loy and Power reaches out to you during the whole film. If you haven't seen it and like classic movies I think you'll really enjoy this one.
