Synopsis Mina, the daughter of a poor coal miner living in Appalachia, fulfills her father's dying wish by agreeing to attend school. However, once she arrives at school, she is teased by the other students about her coat, which is made of patches of material contributed by kind neighbors. However, when Mina tells the stories associated with each patch, the other students come to understand and respect that the history of their community is represented in the scraps of material. Watercolor and graphite illustrations accompany the text.
Minna proudly wears her new coat made of clothing scraps to school, where the other children laugh at her until she tells them the stories behind the scraps.
