Super-experimentalist John Zorn's early '80s project Naked City included New York downtown avant giants Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Fred Frith and Joey Baron. With Zorn's elastic sax blazing the trail, and occasional guest vocals by Yamatsuka Eye (whose style bears no slight resemblance to the Tasmanian Devil of Warner Brothers cartoon fame), Naked City seem capable of anything. Jazz, heavy metal, film music, swing, country, surf noir and sheer sonic assault are deconstructed, jumbled, spliced and spit back with style, finesse, aggression and virtuosity. RADIO is similar in approach to the band's debut, yet forgoes that record's penchant for covers to feature all original Zorn material. The specialty here is the jump-cut collage/splicing of recognizable styles. Monolithic nightmare spasms such as "Pistol Whipping" contrast freakily with the abstract delicacy of "The Bitter and the Sweet" (featuring lovely playing by Frisell). At times, Naked City surprises with its accessibility, as on the breezy California groove of "Sunset Surfer," or the atmospheric funk of "Triggerfingers" and "Sex Fiend." Still, this is not music for the timid of ear.
