A friend told me about this movie. If you like the movie Australia you will probably like this movie too. It is a true story about how the aborigine children of mixed blood were taken from their Mother's,, shipped many miles way and put into camps and terriblyl mistreated. This is the story of three young girls who were captured and escaped and walked 1,500 miles across Austraila to get back home.

A friend told me about this movie and how much she and her husband enjoyed it..As an Australian and embarrassed to say I knew very little about the "Stolen Generation" I wanted to purchase it and watch it for myself..
I enjoyed it very much and the story, especially the ending when you see the sisters now, brought tears to my eyes..I will pass it along to my kids to watch, I know the will enjoy it also...

Heartbreaking true story of three Aboriginal girls who, because of a state decree, are forcibly taken from their loving mothers and placed in a resettlement camp. Taking place in Australia in the 1930's, "Rabbit-Proof Fence" exposes the story of the 'Stolen Generation' - children of mixed race who were ripped from their families and trained to work as servants in white homes. The film follows three girls - Molly (Every Scampi), Daisy (Tirana Danbury) and Gracie (Laura Meagan) - as they escape the camp and embark on a dangerous 1,500 mile journey to return home.

From the late 19th century until the 1960s in Australia, half-Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their families and sent to government-run institutions in an attempt to racially cleanse future generations, making them fully white. These half-caste children are known as the Stolen Generations.A small film with an exceedingly simple plot—the humanity of its characters and performances of its actors center stage—the film benefits tremendously from its director's action-thriller past, displaying a tight sense of pacing. Rabbit Proof Fence documents the actions that were condoned by the Australian government against the Aboriginal peoples there- but most specifically the "half caste" children (those of mixed ethnicity). The story focuses on three young girls, Daisy, Molly, and Gracie. These girls resist the system, initially through the direct help of their mother and grandmother and later through the teachings that they had gained from them as well as their own tenacity. This is a heart wrenching story about the strength of family to overcome obstacles.

I would recommend this film for anyone interested in diversity issues, but would not recommend it for viewing by young children as the section that discusses Mavis (a character the girls meet along their way) may be disturbing to some. That scene is clearly suggestive of abuse, and might confuse young children.
