First off, so there is no mistake, this is not in itself a game. It is a tool, as the name implies. Using maps, dialog editors and menus, this product allows you to create a role playing game that can be played on the PS2. In this it succeeds very nicely. The selections of music are large without being intimidatingly vast, the image gallery and monsters, though somewhat limited, are well varied. Where it falls down is it locks the would-be game maker into a specific template, namely swords and sorcery, and requires that the original tool disc be in the drive in order to use any of your creations. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to share your creation on the Internet with other would-be game designers or from using your creation as a demo for a possible employer. By using pre-fab'ed monsters and music scores, you, the designer, are kept from designing your own look and sound for the game-in-the-making. For what it is meant to do, it does it well. In my opinion, the next generation of RPG maker could benefit from having a CD ripper application built in, a self-containing subroutine so the game could be played on a PC or Mac platform and a freeform character and background designer option that allows the designer to choose from either pre-fab'ed backgrounds and monsters or to make his or her own using a USB device or the analog joysticks on the controller.
