Good price. Easy to use. Plug in and follow the easy on-screen menu. Records what I want, when I want without having an engineering degree. Play-back of recorded shows is very easy to understand. Good quality. Glad I bought it.

I actually own two of these now because of their ease of upgrade.

Pros:
I've upgrade one to a 500gig drive by just installing the new drive and have more than 100 movies stored on it. (NO Software patches needed)
The picture quality is excellent when using the G/B/R.
Recording quality is excellent. Even, when using the SVHS connections.
Being able to edit out scenes or commercials.

Cons:
The menus and pausing takes a little longer than expected at times.
The units are a little noisy due to the fan in the back of the unit.
The recording from DVD to DVR is not good at all.

First 6 months it worked like a charm, First it quit reading DVD Disk.'s. About a month later it locked up on menu screen on the front cover.....Called the support...What a joke dude asked me 20 questions had me reset it then asked if it was plugged in....eh....He gave me his supervisor who suggested I unplug it for 30 minutes and plug it back in and it will work..Goodbye....Walmart couldn't honor the warranty due to they changed their system and I didn't keep the box and lost the receipt......Okie I tore the Hard drive out, Put it in my wifes computer and threw the rest away....Price was only 179.00...We just bought a Philip's DVDR3575H/37..160 gig hard drive with two year extended warranty, Box is in the spare bed room, receipt is in the dresser drawl...

I already had one of these units and a power surge during a storm. I really liked the unit and so I bought another one. It has a few quirky menu items and it doesn't do everything but it records well and it plays recorded DVDs very well. The unit is very reliable and I really like it.

These units are great. I have 4 because of the small HDD only 80 GB. I use them for recording and burning and as video library. The only down side I see is the recording time to a CD-R is 5 hrs and 35 minutes. None of my units will go beyond that even though they say 8 hr capability. The one exception is if your program is 8 hrs long -one program/movie. My movies are 2-3 hrs max.
RCA has no support/ability to fix or replace these units no matter what they tell you. I am still waiting for a refund for a unit with a bad timer unit. It has been 3 months or just short and I had to fight to get the refund after finding the receipt and paying to ship the unit to them they then told me that there was nothing they could do. Their parent company is Thompson. I bought this unit to replace the bad unit. I have had a couple for 6 months with no problem except small HDD_- I have no more room for anything.

  Great Unit for the Price
Review created: 10/10/08

I like the fact that this unit is user friendly. I also like that it uses normal computer parts (80 GB Hard Drive and a DVD-RW Drive) so if I want to upgrade or troubleshoot my unit, then parts are as far as a Circuit City or a click away here on Ebay. Not paying a monthly fee like TIVO is awesome and it pretty much pays for itself.

Since it will not work there is no way to judge it.It will light up but thats all it will do.I have tried all i know to make it work but it won,t. I think its because it was shipped in a small mailing carton with out any packing to protect it.So from my point of view i wouldn't buy another one!RCA is a brand name that is well thought of.This one was made in 2004 and is quite old. Most will last many years if well taken care of.When i bought it i thought it would be as listed,I was wrong

  DVR without paying for TIVO

Well it's funny that I got this opportunity to review this product because I was just thinking today of emailing the eBay seller I purchased it from to let her know how much I've enjoyed this DVR. It is super easy to use and you don't have to think about changing out blank DVDs for a fresh one. It plays DVDs nicely too. I am often working late and miss my favorite shows. I built a DVR myself but it never did work well. It recorded great; usually when I was there! Oh well, this RCA DVR is nice. If it had a built-in TV guide you couldn't beat it. That is the only down side. However, for the price it is excellent and I know when my shows come on anyway...mostly.
I give it an A rating for what it is and is intended to be. If you record lots of shows you may want the model with the 160GB drive instead of the 80GB drive. I only record three shows a week usually so this will last a long time.

Performs surprisingly well for an inexpensive machine
HD is a little smaller than I'd like it to be, but dubbing to DVD is fast and easy
The only drawback to the machine,
the inability edit (pause) during recording
All around, it's much more reliable than the LG units I have owned in the past
I'll buy another when the time comes

The rca unit is actually pretty easy to use even with out the user manual. I probably don't know about features or how to use them since i dont have the manual . But basic progaming and recording either hhd or to disc is simple with the menu. It is a little noisy but you dont notice it with the tv sound on. Bought to update from recording on vhs to digital tech.

This is a great item. You get a lot of the advantages of tivo without the monthly fee. You can rewind live TV if you miss something or want a replay of a sporting event. You can record a show and watch it whenever it is convenient for you , and fast forward through all the commercials. Then if you want to have the episode or series on dvd you can quickly record it. The only thing I dont like is that the remote doesn't want to work from more than about 20 feet away, which is sometime an issue in my house but probably not if you only watch from the room the TV is in.

im glad i bought one with a hard drive, because i wouldve upgraded later and this wouldve been a waste. it does exactly what it advertises and for the price its very much worth it. i wish i didnt have to turn to the channel to record something. and it doesnt receive a signal well from on demand but other than that its cool. i also love the different quality settings so i can fit more stuff on 1 dvd.

I did most of my Christmas shopping on-line this year as well as the past 5 years.I decided to use ebay this year to purchase 4 0r 5 items. Two of the items where sold to me to be new items did not work when i received them. One of the sellers gave me a refund but the other we are still working on.I think when something is advertized to be new then it should work when i recieve it.I have had very good luck in the past with ebay.It is really embarrassing to give a gift and it doesnt work.

  Easy to use Digital Recorder
Review created: 01/02/08

The recorder is easy to set up and use. I bought several of these. I wanted a step up from VCR, but did not want to spend a lot and did not want to pay a monthly fee. I have been very happy with this product. The refurbished units do not record on -R or -RW, but that is not a problem for me. They do play both formats.

Let's go to the point:
1- I bought this item because it has "free tivo basic service". Yes only if it has never been upgraded to regular service, otherwise you will loose basic service forever!! My unit had been upgraded by the previous owner so I lost the basic service. This was the only reason I bought it, so now somebody is going to get a nice Christmas gift this year!!!

2- This unit is not stereo, it is mono only. there is a constant humming because of the mono thing. No, no, no RCA, shame shame shame!!! What the f were you thinking about...saving 10 cents or something?

3- Usually with a dvd recorder or a vcr, if you want to record a show, you press record button and done press it again for 30 minute increments. With this dvr, there are about 128.374 steps before you record: are you sure you want to record, is this the correct channel, record on dvd or dvr?, what quality, how long (enter time ending and duration time) what channel....Oh please... piece of crap!!!

4- I do record tv shows to see later at my leisure and this is the raison d'etre of this dvr.

5.- Will replace with something better when it comes along used on ebay. Will NOT spend the insane amount of money for new dvrs.

6- Forget about tv and use the net, veoh, hulu, netflix. I record 3 shows per week. I will watch them all together at the end of the season, that way I am not anxious.

RCA DVR 80GB, Good Product, Intuitive
Review created: 09/10/09

The "RCA DVR w/ 80GB Hard Drive, DRC8030N" has been a great DVR purchase for our Family. This is the second unit I've owned. The first unit periodically became "stuck" and required resetting which worked without problems. The first unit has been FIXED but I didn't want to live without a DVR again so I purchased another one at this great price on eBay.
Pros:
- Recording Timers allow Timer Naming for easy lookup and sorting;
- secondary built-in Tuner allows 2nd channel Viewing while WATCHING A PRE-RECORDED SHOW
- Intuitive easy Channel and Timer Setup
- Easy Editing allowing Video Chapter "marking and hiding" while viewing so commercials can be removed during Copying/Video Libray Archival.
- Easy 1 minute or chapter skipping to quickly bypass annoying commercials;
- reasonably fast copying (only computer copying is faster)
- easy DVD "Finalize" feature for universal DVD compatibility.
Cons:
- These are no longer made so DVR makers are forcing "Fee-Based" Service charge development only (i.e. TiVo );
(This is the same story for the Panasonic DVR with digital tuner)
- This RCA model will only work for analog signal (no digital feeds)
I will use this model as long my cable company allows analoge signal purchase and the unit can be repaired and maintained. This is great unit.

The RCA DRC8030N is GREAT when working. Can break Easy.
Review created: 09/07/09

I have found the RCA DRC8030N DVR unit works GREAT for the most part. I have several of them for different reasons and uses. I have found they do not have a long lifespan before some kind of problem is encountered. I have found that the DVD drive usually stops working first followed by the internal electronics that requires a technician to repair if they can and I wouldn't hold your breath that they can. I like the unit because it will allow me to chose the exact number of hours and minutes I want to record. Also, there are 6 levels of recording quality which is helpful when you want to put many hours of recordings onto a single DVD. However, you must do the recordings at the appropriate recording quality to fit your chosen amount of time onto the DVD that is burned by the unit at your convenience. You can also put more than one recording or show onto the DVDs. I have found that I have needed to replace the DVD unit in the machine more often than anything else. I now have several of them and will continue to use them until a unit comes to the market that surpasses this one and is in a price range I can afford.

I wish you the best of luck if you choose to purchase a unit. If you are having problems with yours, don't just through it in the garbage. There are people like myself who would like to purchase the unit from you on Ebay even if it doesn't work.

Steve M.
