The tracks on Volume IX of this series were the last Billie Holiday did for Columbia before jumping labels to Decca, where her material would receive the more fully orchestrated pop treatment. Though she swung harder than any pop singer while creating new hooks inside jazz structures, Ms. Holiday was not a blues singer by trade or nature. But with her main vocal influence being Bessie Smith, a "blues-is-a-feeling" phrasing underpins her horn-like delivery on these enduring pieces. With compassionate support coming from the likes of Benny Carter, Lester Young, and especially Roy Eldridge, Billie's sonic seduction works its magic here on forgotten lightweight fluff as well as the time-burnished classics "St. Louis Blues," "All Of Me," and "Georgia On My Mind." Of historical note; the version of "God Bless The Child" on this CD is the world-premiere recording.
