A great show for those with an open mind

Queer as Folk is a groundbreaking TV series that shattered many taboos concerning the gay communities of america. Following the lives of 5 gay men and 2 lesbian women, it's easiest to call it a gay person's "Sex and the City", but it is definitely more than just that. Every episode has a huge political statement to make, whether its about gay marriage, job discrimination, or family disownment. This is a brutally realistic vision of life in a gay district, with promiscuous sex, constant drug use, and life with HIV are all touched on and never shied away from. The characters are all extremely complex individuals who challenge stereotypical views of all gays and also entertain immensely. This is also a very funny show, as it is constantly taking things in stride and joking all the way. Sometimes the show can be so witty and sarcastic that it could be mistaken for a comedy at first glance. Season 3 is my favorite because of the inner-conflicts that rage throughout (characters who sell out to work with homophobes, a meth addict losing all of his friends, steroid use to combat HIV, etc.) and is probably the most emotionally engaging. The best show ever? Maybe not, but it's pretty damn important, and it's still pretty damn close.
