I read "The Other Boleyn Girl" and looked forward to Ms. Gregory's book "The Queen's Fool." If you love history, but also want a little fiction thrown in for suspense you won't be disappointed. The year is 1553 and Hannah Green who is a fourteen year old Jewish girl, forced to leave Spain, finds herself at the Tudor Court. Hannah has the ability to foresee the future. She finds herself adopted by Robert Dudley, the son of King Edward's protector, who brings her to court as a "holy fool" for Queen Mary and then eventually, Queen Elizabeth. Hannah is working as a spy but is to be known publicly as a "fool" because there are laws against witchcraft and heresy. The hardest part for Hannah is choosing what life she will lead. She is in love with Dudley but is promised to a commoner. Ms. Gregory is a vivid storyteller and brings the past alive with all the picturesque scenes from court life and plenty of period detail. Always an excellent read!

This is a well written novel. The author well researches for historical facts and then creates a gripping novel from the perspective of the Queen's servant. There was no objectionable language or violence. I would recommend this novel to book clubs that enjoy historical novels.

  New spin on old history!

I love Phillipa's books about the intrigues of court life. This book puts a different spin on things. The main character dresses like a boy because women aren't allowed to do certain things in that era. Wow..great idea and another neat spin is that she can see into the future which is very nice to have when you are with royalty. Great book!!! Hard to put down.

This book was fabulous! It was a page turner and I couldn't put it down. Phillipa Gregory has done her research and created a historical fiction novel that is fun and suspenseful to read while accurately giving the history and tone for the era it's set in. You will enjoy this one!

The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory

Firstly, I loved this book. I like reading how Philippa Gregory makes history a great read. The only part I realy didn't like was how the death of Hannah's mother is brought up time and time again, in the same text. This part was annoying. Other than that, the rest of the book was well worth the read. I liked this book so much that I bought the Virgins Lover (and finished it this afternoon)...and now am searching ebay for the next book =)
If you love history, and romance, and adventure, you'll love these books.

  Better than her last book!

After reading The Other Boleyn Girl, I was anxious to read the next book in the series. I was not disappointed with The Queen's Fool. From start to finish, the author draws the reader in with Hannah Green's story of leaving Spain during the Inquisition, working with her father, being begged for a Holy Fool by Sir Robert Dudley, and her access to the Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth. Admittedly, you may wish to knock some sense into Hannah once or twice.

It's an exciting read. Philippa Gregory really made Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth come alive in this book. For those who know a bit about the Tudors, the author's story weaves fact and fiction together seamlessly. Queen Mary's descent into fear, hopelessness, heartbreak, and revenge--her change from hopeful Queen into Bloody Mary is described. Elizabeth's character isn't neglected, either.

I am eagerly awaiting The Virgin's Lover and look forward to reading this book, too.

  An interesting take

This book offers a different perspective on two of England's best known queens. Through the eyes of Hannah, we come to see 2 very complex women, very real in their ambitions, passions, and jealousy. Hannah herself is also an interesting character, changing and growing throughout the story's events. A thouroughly enjoyable book.

I very much enjoyed this book. It is the second I have read by the author. I only read historical fiction so that might be part of it, but if you like this genre these are great books. The characters are very real whether they are historical or part of the fiction. The wit written for the dialogue is entertaining and surprising.

  Unfortunate experience!

I wanted the book but unfortunately this is my first negative experience on e-bay. I paid for the book and four weeks later (and after 5 e-mails to the seller) PayPal had to get involved and issue me a refund. BUT...every other experience has been extremely glowing.
