Although many music fans were convinced that Def Leppard would become hard rock's next big band, few could have predicted the massive across-the-boards success that its third record, 1983's PYROMANIA, achieved. Many wondered why it was taking the group so long to release a follow-up to 1981's HIGH 'N' DRY, but the finished product was well worth the wait. Not only did it become one of the year's best-selling albums and made the band instant U.S. arena headliners, but it has remained a consistent seller ever since (by 1994, it had reached nine million units in the U.S. alone). The songwriting and overall sound was more streamlined and succinct this time around--while there are guitar riffs galore, the songs have more of a pop feel. Founding guitarist Pete Willis left during the recording, replaced by Phil Collen, who fit in perfectly with the band. The album features such mega-hits as "Photograph," "Rock of Ages," and "Foolin'," as well as a couple of other tracks that could have easily been singles as well, "Rock Rock (Till You Drop)" and "Too Late for Love." PYROMANIA remains one of the best and most popular hard-rock recordings of the '80s. Reviews Review created: 02/05/08 by: I am a big Def Lepppard fan. I had one of the cassette to play in my chevelle (muscle car) but it broke. I found one on e bay and was thrilled to get it.The price was right :) Review ID: 10000000005436947 Was this review helpful? Report this review When Def Leppard appeared in concert at Irvine's Verizon Wireless Amphitheater last September 30, they started off the show with "Rocket" and "Animal." These are the second and third cuts from their 1987 release "Hysteria." The band also played "Pour Some Sugar on me," "Armageddon it," and even some of the more deeper cuts such as "Excitable." They are aware of the huge popularity of "Hysteria," which is their most critically acclaimed and commercially successful offering. Known for their melodic heavy metal tunes and sweet backup and harmonizing vocals, "Hysteria" shows all these and more at their best. They even get political in "Dogs of War" which has sound bytes from President Reagan interwoven with the haunting guitar riffs at one point. I have the CD in my collection already and it has been worn out in places from all the times it has been played on my car stereo. My purchase of the cassette rounds out my cassette collection of Def Leppard releases and makes very good workout music (especially some of the more rousing tunes such as "Armageddon it" and "Love and Affection." I am one of those dinosaurs who still uses a Sony Walkman with cassette and for now, see no reason to upgrade. Def Leppard fascinates me because they are so hard to classify. Their guitarists are as energetic as any other metal group yet their songs are overwhelmingly upbeat, usually about love and hope. The melodic nature of their songs and the harmonizing style cause them to be thought of as "pop" in some ways yet many of their songs are too edgy for pop. In the end, I'll go with my description of their style to a friend with pre-teenagers: "Family friendly heavy metal." Review ID: 10000000004752836 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 03/23/07 by: pyfr-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Music Pros: Simply one of the most crushing rock releases ever. It still works. Cons: Most of the fools in metaldom spent the following decade trying to copy it. I suppose that everybody has an album that defined their childhood, the one that caused them to spend countless hours playing air guitar (or air ukulele, if you live in Hawaii) in front of the full-length mirror. Most white people my age probably started with KISS, and I knew more than a few black kids who spent an awful lot of time trying to master the moonwalk and Michael Jackson's voice back in the early 1980's. Hey wait, I think I did too for a brief time. In 1983, Def Leppard was the coolest group of white dudes on the planet for me. In fact, I seem to remember that Bringin' On The... Review ID: 10000000003238548 Review created: 05/23/04 by: MattA75 -- a member of Epinions Pros: great melodies/harmonies, rocks hard at times, no real bad songs Cons: Lange's problem with Rick Allen When the band Def Leppard is brought up, oh so many people consider them a relic of the hair band era that MTV gave us. They get lumped in with the Cinderellas and the Wingers and the Strypers. But while all those bands sucked (yes, Cinderella sucked people, badly I might add), in terms of creating albums that stand the test of time, Def Lep belongs more in the category of a Bon Jovi, though their latter albums haven't sold nearly as well as Jovi's (only 1999's Euphoria has gone gold since the band's last multi-platinum sales success, 1992's Adrenalize). With Pyromania, Def Leppard became one. Review ID: 10000000000217094 Review created: 11/20/01 by: jag2112 -- a member of Epinions Pros: Great songs. Classic Def Leppard sound. A classic that will survive the rock of ages... Cons: None really. Want to feel old? Consider this. Anyone who was born during the time when Def Leppard released their breakthrough, multi-platinum, enormously popular album Pyromania can now drive, vote and, in some places, drink beer legally. 18 years. It's been 18 years since this somewhat soft metal band released that album that would change everything for them. Everything for the better, and everything for the worse. Prior to 1983's release of Pyromania, Def Leppard, an English hard-rock/metal band, garnered limited success with their debut album entitled On Through the Night (1980) and more wide-spread... Review ID: 10000000000217101 Review created: 04/09/01 by: missy32 -- a member of Epinions Pros: Lyrics are the best, Joe Elliot really sings great, Cons: NONE If you grew up in the 80 s and you loved rock and roll music, then you had to have heard of this awesome rock band called DEF LEPPARD. The 80 s were a time when rock and roll was changing. You had the new groups that wore make up and dressed up like women, and you had the groups that were just strange all around. But with Def Leppard they were a rock band that looked normal. Good old jeans and t-shirts. Def Leppard has many CD s out, but I have to say this is one of the best albums they released. DEF LEPPARD went through many changes, including their drummer losing his one arm. This didn t... Rick Allen still has his left arm! Cons: Only 10 tracks long. And what's with that weird sound effects at the end of Track 10!?!? I have been a Def Leppard fan for a very long time. I grew up listening to them on the radio in the 80's. Def Leppard is probably one of the best rock bands to live through the 80's and now into the 90's. 1983's Pyromania was Def Leppard's third album, and boy it was a great one. Three songs on this album made it on their greatest hits album. Several others should of too! Def Leppard is: Joe Elliot- Lead Vocals Steve Clark- Guitars Phil Collen- Guitars Rick Allen- Drums Rick Savage- Bass Guitar Pete Willis- "Invisible" Guitarist The album is only 10 tracks long, but it is still one of the...
