Album Notes
Various Artists: Alan Stivell, Mary Jane Lamond, Peatbog Faeries, Sinead O'Connor, Ashley MacIsaac, Capercaillie, Cara Dillon.
A collection of Celtic songs from various countries (including Ireland, Scotland, and Canada), this 2005 Putumayo set features contemporary tunes that nod to tradition. Emer Kenny's dreamy, Enya-like "Parting Glass" opens the set, and Capercaillie's highly percussive "Hoireann O" sounds like a trip-hop track until the rhythms are joined by guitar and fiddle. CELTIC CROSSROADS also presents the iconic Irish singer Sinead O'Connor gently making her way through an excellent rendition of "Her Mantle So Green," and Canadian violinist Ashley MacIsaac joining vocalist Mary Jane Lamond for the electronica-tinged "To America We Go." This is a solid compilation of dynamic selections of Celtic music that aren't afraid to flout convention.
