Push is a tragic story about a girl who is repeatedly physically and sexually abused by her mother and father, gives birth to her father's baby, and becomes diagnosed with AIDS.

It's a tragic story based on a few people Sapphire came in contact with, and she claims that it is very realistic for some people. As someone much more fortunate, it is hard for me to even imagine how someone survives this kind of life, but I can say that it was enlightening for me to read the book. It got me out of my comfort zone, and it was an absorbing read.

I hope to be a writer like this someday "Push" mindblow

I heard of the movie coming out so I rush to read before, I cried, I learned about myself and had more compassion for everyone who feels unloved, abused and misused. But what I do know is more hope. The writer was so real, with the misspelling, Precious is someone I know now...

I purchased this book because I saw I preview of the movie due out later this year. The book was good, very sad though. If you're not one who uses a lot of slang then you might struggle with some of the words. Good book! "Precious" is the name of the movie, you can watch the movie trailer on youtube.

i bought this book after seeing the preview for the movie that debuted at Sundance. the style is written in such crude form (she doesnt have much education) that you feel you are sitting down listening to her talk. the details are both heartwrenching and thought provoking.

I bought this book after hearing all the press it received at the Sundance Film Festival. It is a must read book although the subject matter is not for the faint of heart. I would recommend this book to others.

This is a great book. I didnt want to put it down. I like the fact that it was written the same way as it's spoken. You become one with the character. You feel the emotions she's going through. This novel brings awareness to a issue not too many people want to talk about or know about.

I love this book only because it brings to light what is really going on in some children's lives. It's real, raw, and harsh reality. I hated it because of the awful things this child endured at the hands of adults who were suppose to protect her!

Very good book written in first person about an illterate, overweight teenage mother who has suffered physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her mother and father. After being put into a GED programm she connects with a eacher her truly cares about her well being and she takes you along on her journey as she takes stock of who she is, why she is who she is and finding her place in a society where she has previously been invisible. So well written but not always easy to understand, I found it very hard to put it down. Great read.

This book was incredible. You'll swear Precious herself is telling you the story. It's everything a good book should be; I laughed, I cried, I gasped in horror. I couldn't put it down. Best book I've read in quite some time!

I bought this book as I heard the movie will be coming out soon. It was difficult to read at times because the main characters life was so awful, but she is a survivor and as a nyc public school teacher, i found it very moving and uplifting.

The book is awesome and because it is told in the first person narrative it speaks directly to you and your heart. You hear in her own voice how she is trying to dig herself out of a man-made hell and the uncompromised determination that has to see the job done. The character that Sapphire created in this novel is relentless, tireless, unyeilding, persistent and ruthless in her quest to find self-love, life accomplishments and self worth despite EVERY obstacle in her way. When you walk away from this work, you start asking yourself real life questions and wondering have you done all you REALLY can do to be the best success you want to be. This is a must-read for young and old adults that will invoke self-evaluation.

After reading Push by Sapphire, It made me believe that there is hope after the storm . We go through the worst of life to get to the top.

A story that picked me up and made me grateful to be me, to tell my story to be happy loving and being me.

The beauty we see of life through its roughness.

Didn't live up to the hype
Review created: 12/10/09

This was an interesting read and of course like many others I wanted to read it after all hype. I didn't initially find it hard to read because of the dialect but got used to it after awhile. I was disappointed with the ending. I didn't feel "complete" after reading it. I felt that the author left me needing something more.

All in all it's an interesting book, however, if not for the movie I'm not sure it's something I would have otherwise read.

  A Disappointment
Review created: 12/10/09

I bought this book because of the film, which I saw and liked. The book, how-
ever, was a huge disappointment. It is poorly written and very difficult to
read. This is not because of the sub-standard English of the characters,
however, because the reader gets used to that after awhile. The novel has
no shape or structure and is very badly organized. I do not believe that
Sapphire is a writer of any talent. She has fashioned some very incendiary
material into a book, but that does not make it valuable. Form and content
must go hand in hand and this book only has the latter. It was excrutiating
to read.

  Speechless.....

This was a very good book, but the content is quite disturbing. Very very real, but because of that at times I had to put the book down and take a break for my mind to comprehend a parent like this. I'll say this....KUDO'S to the young woman for persevering and raising herself to a whole new realm of humanness that her parents certainly tried to keep her from.

A story of amazing cruelty, strength, overcoming adversity and triumph. You WILL experience a whole range of emotions for this amazing young woman. I'd read it again.

  A Must Read!

PUSH is a literary gem. Precious is a diamond in the rough. Placed in the hands of the wrong people, grossly misused and vilely abused, yet all the while still a diamond. The story unfolds as she realizes her humanity with the help of a teacher, Miss Blue Rain, and discovers a form of communication that does not involve violence, abuse, or a lack of love. A must read!

the book was excellent- a good, gritty story of a 16 year old that appears to have a no way out situation in her home and education encounters the help of a very involved teacher, finds not only herself but her relationship to get out of her state of poverty in order to make a better life for her kids...sad buta very powerful message!

Pushing for "Push" as a must-read
Review created: 11/24/09
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Push exposed the raw, real, heinous crimes of incest that are the biggest secrets in so many families of all races, ethnicities, religions and social strata. Sapphire writes as Precious, the main character, speaks which is illiterate and a little ignorant but perceptive. From the first sentence you know this is no ordinary story. Must read!!

This is not appropriate for children. There are numerous graphic depictions of sexual intercourse between adults and children/babies that is sickening and would be too mcuh for young eyes.

So, the book was pretty interesting. I didn't care for the ebonics but, overall it was a excellent story. It shows just how screwed up some people really are. the struggles of that young woman truly bought me to tears. It is definitely a must read. Now I can watch the movie.
