Album Notes Personnel: Les Claypool (vocals, guitar, bass, percussion); Eenor (guitar, slide guitar, Jew's harp, background vocals); Warren Haynes (guitar); Gabby Lang (sitar); Ben Barnes (violin); Sam Bass (viola, cello); Skerik (baritone saxophone); Mike Dillon (vibraphone, marimba, drums, tabla, cuica, pandeira, percussion); Lonnie Marshall, Norwood Fisher (bass); Fish Fisher, Dean Johnson, Jay Lane (drums). Les Claypool is nothing short of a fringe art genius. With a cult following that has never relied on mainstream promotion or acceptance, the Primus bassist/vocalist forges ahead with his journey into musical madness, Frog Brigade. In typically offbeat Claypool fashion, the Brigade's third album PURPLE ONION was preceded by two live releases. PURPLE ONION has the instantly endearing quirkiness of YELLOW SUBMARINE and the melodic abandon of JOE'S GARAGE. "Whamola" and "D's Diner" revisit territory forged in Les's Sausage/Primus days, while "Ding Dang" makes a relevant social statement about bigotry with trademark Claypool prose. In an age of marketing strategy and bandwagon trends, PURPLE ONION is refreshingly original and entertaining.
