Punished by Rewards by Alfie Kohn
As a second grade teacher I have seen how rewards (stickers, candy, etc.) can temporarily get a student to accomplish something. I didn't want to read this book because I didn't want to change! I like giving out stuff! I reluctantly read this book for a class I was taking. It changed my thinking on not only rewarding but teaching and parenting as well. Kohn is well known and respected in the world of education. I appreciate his desire to teach teachers how to motivate kids instrinsically, not through rewards. It was a truly amazing book. I'll probably be ordering more as gifts. The copy I ordered was a gift for a teacher friend. The one I read three years ago is well worn. I've applied so many of the concepts and it has made me a much more effective teacher. 10 stars out of 10! Great gift for a teacher or parent. Although research based, it is a very easy to read book. Super examples in it too. Wonderful!
